About Susan

I am a Special Education teacher with CCSD, in my 9th year. I was a stay-at-home mother until my children were in upper grade school. I have a TESL endorsement from Sierra Nevada College. I have tutored professionally for four years in Reading, Writing, and Social Studies.

My B.S. is from North Dakota State University; with a double major is English and Child Development/Family Relations. I specialize in Reading Comprehension, phonics and composition, from Kindergarten through Middle School. I have extensive experience with TESL students; primarily Hispanic, but also French, Russian and Hebrew. I look forward to working with your child. together, we can be successful.

Most English teachers now have not had the benefit of the "old school" grammar and syntax. It has not been taught for many years. Many college students today demonstrate a poor understanding of how grammar works, what "voice" is acceptable in different settings. It isn't rocket science; but my feeling is without it a child's success as an adult sometimes suffers.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I have taught phonics based programs for 17 years; first with my son who was late to speak, and for the past 10 years in my Early Childhood Special Education class through the Clark County School District. Programs which have proved effective are, for example: Zoophonics, BLL and Lively Letters. My success rate for getting students to effectively notice the nuances between vowels, for instance, is high.
