I have international teaching experience in having worked not only in my home country (USA) but also in Australia, throughout SE Asia and in Latin American countries. I have nearly 40 years' experience within the teaching profession at all levels of education - primary, secondary and university, in both private and public education. Although my tutoring focus is now primarily in the English discipline, I have many years of distinguished experience within the fields of Special Education (as a teacher and as Director of Special Education) and community service, inclusive of ESL, learning difficulties, gifted education and many other less-functional learning and social disorders. Outside the regular and special classrooms, I have been a practicing tutor, working with individuals and small group instruction for the past 5 years. All my tutored students have always realized successful outcomes at varying levels and degrees corresponding to their individual needs and commitment.
What I love most about tutoring is that each individual with whom I work is different in so many ways - learning needs, personality, skills, interests. For me, this is a welcome challenge, a fresh and exciting experience with each individual - a new beginning. I love, too, the signs, expressions and words of ongoing progress, of new-found success and the rewards that this brings to each person. I love the positive feedback, praise and testimonials from participants and from their family members. I love the many opportunities that I have to share my knowledge and skills with so many others and the opportunity to make such an important and healthy contribution to their lives.
I teach others through my extensive experience, knowledge and skills but, equally as important, through my positive approach to learning and understanding, consideration and concern for each individual learner whom I work with. I am a most effective tutor for the following reasons: I understand how individuals learn; I try to understand their needs from the moment we meet; I establish a comfortable learning environment and interact and communicate quite well with all my learners.
With extensive experience in assisting many individuals of varying ages in developing their basic Phonics (sound production) and English skills - speaking, reading, listening and written, grammar, testing preparation, organization, management, thinking and study skills - I have much to offer to just about every school-age individual. Furthermore, I have extensive experience in preparing students in the ESL, IELTS and TOEFL and in transitioning from secondary completion to university/community college entrance, as well as practical experience in life-skills enhancement, vocational planning and academic advising.
Beyond the formal school stages, I have worked also closely (particularly throughout the last 5 years) with individuals needing to develop or upgrade their business-related language skills. In addition to my 3 degrees in education, I also have a 4th degree, a BA (business), in accounting, marketing and management inclusive of direct professional experience within the business community, including that as a sole proprietor of my own business. Many of my clients, seeking to improve their business English skills have come from within the corporate business sector.
All life is important but even more important is the way that one's own actions impact on another's life. For those of you who believe that you have not found the success you are looking for, then don't look back on what you have done; rather look forward to what you can and must do. Call me, today, if you need my help. Within special individual circumstances, hourly rates may be lower, eg., additional family members receiving tuition or personal financial hardship.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
