"Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” My name is Wendy. This quote by Benjamin Franklin characterizes my teaching style. When I try to recall what I learned in elementary school, I remember my fifth grade assignment to write a paper on the country of my choice and draw pictures or create graphics to complement it. I chose to write about Canada and cut out and glued a variety of maps to accompany my report. My parents assisted me in finding colorful pictures of Canadian people and landscapes. I also generated graphs and charts comparing and contrasting different cities in Canada. I have a vivid recollection of completing that particular assignment, because I actively participated in researching and writing it.

I love to learn; therefore, I encourage and motivate people to learn in an enjoyable manner. I am an effective licensed and certified public school elementary teacher with nine years of experience teaching second, third, and fourth grade students. I also worked as a television producer. I frequently auditioned and hired child and adult actors. I remember staying up late to find new ways to help actors to not only memorize their lines, but to also understand the meaning behind what they were saying. Their “Aha!” moments sparked my desire to work towards a Master of Science degree in elementary education. I concurrently earned a Master of Arts degree in Educational Counseling, which contributes to my understanding of how and why my students learn.

I am more than a tutor. I am a teacher. I utilize highly regarded, research-based instructional programs that I have been thoroughly trained for the academic subjects I teach. Due to the fact that my students have diverse learning styles and needs, I customize my lessons to fit their educational levels and needs. I use professional assessments to determine my students’ current levels of academic achievement, so that I can target and fill in gaps in the foundational skills in each subject. I specialize in the subjects of English,

Video Production

I earned a B.A. in Radio/T.V. Broadcasting from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. After college, I worked in a video production company in Chicago for eight years. I worked as an intern, teleprompter operator, production assistant, assistant producer, and producer. Additionally, I worked on casting for commercials, press junkets, corporate training videos, television programs, and the Illinois Lottery game show. When I left the production company, I worked as a freelance producer and teleprompter operator before I moved to Las Vegas to become an elementary school teacher.

Elementary (K-6th)

I earned a Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern University in 2002. I am licensed as a teacher and substitute teacher (K-8), a school counselor (K-12). I taught 2nd grade with the Clark County School District (CCSD) in Las Vegas, Nevada for one year and a half. In addition to teaching 3rd and 4th grades, I also worked as a substitute teacher with CCSD.
Phonics,

Phonics

I worked as a second and third grade licensed teacher with the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada. I participated in a professional development course called Explicit Phonics last year. The course focused on the key components, which include phonemic awareness warm-up, introduction/review of sound spellings, blending, word work, decodable text, and dictation. Explicit phonics instruction is instruction in which the teacher directly tells students the expected outcome, overtly models the skill, and provides students with many opportunities to apply the skill with ongoing feedback.
Reading,

Reading

Reading comprehension is an essential component of every student's academic success. I believe that it is crucial for students to not only develop good reading skills, but to learn to love to read as a way of life. I will facilitate third grade students' learning by modeling and practicing how to describe the traits, motivations, or feelings of characters in a story and how their actions impact the story’s events. Additionally, I will guide students to use text features and information gained from illustrations (like key words, maps, and photographs) to understand and locate information relevant to a given topic. We will also work on decoding and figuring out the meaning of multi-syllable words using prefixes and suffixes (including the Latin suffixes -able, -ment, and -tion). I will assist fourth grade students to improve their skills in using details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says. determining the main idea of a text, and explaining how it is supported by details. I will also model and practice how to summarize text, as well as to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words using letter-sound relationships, knowledge of syllables, and Greek and Latin root words (e.g., spect, dict, auto, bio, tele), prefixes, and suffixes (e.g., mid-, mis-, pre-, -less, -ment, -y). These Nevada Academic Content Standards promote critical thinking, reasoning, and application of knowledge, and are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world.
Spelling,

Spelling

I assess my students using a list of words from the research-based approach Words Their Way books. This program, which is a hands-on, developmentally-driven approach to word study, illustrates how to integrate and teach children phonics, vocabulary, and spelling skills. Common core state standards are listed for each activity. This program will help me to know my students’ literacy progress, organize for instruction, and implement word study. I review a list of spelling words with my students at the beginning of every lesson. We use puzzles and games to practice spelling these words with an understanding of the rules we use to spell. We practice decoding words using long and short vowels, vowel teams (e.g., ai, ea, ou), and prefixes and suffixes (e.g., re-, un-, dis-, -ed, -es, -ly).
