About Ralph

Ralph S. brings more than 35 years of nonprofit management, teaching, administration and business operations experience to his consulting practice. He “switched gears” after 17 years of executive management and leadership roles in the nonprofit professional theatre to move into the corporate sector, where he has worked as a technology trainer, performance improvement and customer service consultant.

Ralph relishes his contributions to the advancement of young people and teachers. He is most proud of being one of more than 400 volunteers nationwide who dedicate their time to mentor students from low-income families and prepare them for college success. His service helps Minds Matter achieve its mission each year, making the volunteer to paid staff ratio approximately 275 to 1. Using conservative figures, the value of that volunteered time is nearly $2,000,000!

As a lover of literature and an avid reader, I pride myself on my understanding of English and both the written and spoken word. As an experienced nonprofit management consultant, I have been a leader and public speaker with various cultural programs and initiatives across the United States. I hold a BA in Speech & Communications from Duquesne University, and an MFA in Theatre from Boston University, and also completed post-graduate work in Arts Administration at Columbia University.

He and his wife, Patti, currently reside in Las Vegas, NV, and enjoy tennis, golf, travel, swimming, hiking, kayaking, choral singing, cooking and family genealogy.

Even though organic chemistry and calculus essentially dashed my pursuit of an early medical career, my PSAT, SAT, and GRE scores were high. I have never been stressed out about taking a test -- which I believe is more than half the battle!

I am a certified expert in Microsoft Office applications: Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and have spent over 20 years in technology training experience in healthcare, legal, financial services, and insurance industries.

I played several different organized sports through high school. I continue to enjoy baseball, tennis, golf, travel, swimming, hiking, kayaking, choral singing, cooking and family genealogy.

I have extensive experience guiding clients through the maze of systems, structures, processes and support employed to enable learning & development at both individual and organizational levels. It is immensely rewarding to work with people that are willing to learn and improve themselves. I value life-long learning and want to share my passion with others and help them learn something invaluable about themselves in the process.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
