My background is in Elementary Education. I have worked with Pre-K to 12th grade students with different abilities extensively. I assess my student's current ability level and then I re-assess to measure progress. I use observation and tests that I develop myself according to grade level. I give my students ownership for their learning. For instance, I give them a certain amount of choice as to what they would like to read from book lists such as accelerated reader. I will encourage library use and reading from a variety of genres such as science or historical fiction.
I use a variety of proven methods, such as leveled books for reading, making sure that my students learn the vocabulary used in the stories they read by creating a personal dictionary with the definition of these words. And allowing for further practice of new vocabulary such as rewriting the ending of a short story, completing sentences taken from the story with a few missing words, identifying story elements such as character, plot, setting, etc., for comprehension, I will develop questions about the beginning, middle and end of stories.
Furthermore, I will teach sentence structure and punctuation using sentences from the story being read. I would use those same sentences scrambled and give the student the opportunity to reconstruct the sentence into a meaningful properly constructed sentence. In another lesson, I would give my student practice in proper punctuation of those same sentences taken from the story being read. Then, I would teach several lessons on paragraph development. Starting with developing a good topic sentence and how to develop a paragraph with sentences that support a topic. Meanwhile, students are learning how to control their topic. I would give examples of good topic sentences and allow for practice in creating topic sentences. I would incorporate technology use by using a phonics website for further practice. I would also make suggestions about websites that are good for math practice.
I am a firm believer that students should master how to do math manually before allowing the use of a calculator. Once I have determined the need of my student through observation, student work samples, tests and I.E.P.s, I can determine appropriate work levels. Students need to become fluent in math facts and learn how to apply those facts to solve problems. I will give much opportunity for practice and a variety of examples as to how to arrive at the same answer for any given math problem.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a love for learning and teaching. I have a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education and more than 7 years experience in teaching and tutoring. I am patient and eager to help all children to learn. I am willing to go that extra mile to help.
