University of Nevada, Las Vegas (Kinesiology)
Greetings to all students and parents alike! My name is Leonard. I am from Los Angeles, CA, and currently living in Las Vegas while studying at UNLV. I am a senior and I am finishing up my Bachelor's degree in Kinesiological Sciences (formerly, Music). I attended the Alexander Hamilton Academy of Music for high school, where among my academia, I studied instrumental and electronic music for each of my four years there. I'm also a former collegiate basketball player. I played basketball for one year at New Mexico Highlands University, where I was awarded a four year athletic scholarship. After a brief stint on Santa Monica College's basketball team, academics lead me to Las Vegas to finish my degree at UNLV. After high school, I worked as a Teacher's Aide at a USC Magnet, a K-12. While there, I was involved in many of the duties that the teachers held, ranging from physical education instruction, to teaching music, and tutoring sessions virtually every day of the week. During the summer of 2014, I also had the opportunity to be a camp counselor at one of the most prestigious camps in all of California, Tocaloma Day Camp. While there, I worked with children ages 4-14. My goal each day was to provide a safe, fun environment for the children to grow and learn in.
I have had many years of practice instructing and tutoring students, and I like to take pride in the fact that I offer each student an environment for them to feel safe in asking any questions without ever feeling unsure or uneasy. I am a very welcoming and patient person and use that patience to help the student realize that basically "Rome wasn't built in a day", and all things take time. One value I always try to instill in each student I interact with is perseverance. I want to leave each child not only with the right tools to be successful in every subject they study, but with the mindset that they can be successful with a little work and belief in themselves. I began playing basketball at age 5. I grew up playing, and studying the sport. I like to think of myself as a "gym rat" who lives and breathes the game. I'm fortunate enough to have an uncle, Marques Johnson, who played under legendary coach John Wooden, and was also a 12 year NBA veteran. He and my cousin (former assistant coach at St. John's University and current basketball Advisor at UCLA) have taught me just about everything I know about the game of basketball. I am confident that I come from a lineage of great basketball minds!
I am currently studying kinesiology, which is the study on how the body moves. On top of taking numerous courses on fitness techniques, I also received direct fitness training from the University of Texas fitness staff during my time as a collegiate basketball player.
