About Valerie

My name is Valerie F., and I am passionate about English! I currently teach English (Literature, Grammar, Reading, and Creative Writing) to middle school and high school students. I have taught in this setting since 2010 until the present. My love is helping students move from "I hate English" to "Oh, yeah!!! English is cool!!"

I like to use different methods in English education, but most of all I love to involve the student. No more dreary lectures, but hands on learning which makes the time go by and which helps not only in the learning process, but also in the application of grammar concepts. Working from sentences and sentence construction, I will teach the parts of speech which are essential to the passage of college exams. I like the Abeka curriculum which uses as its guide the SAT and ACT exams.

I have a Bachelor's of Science in Criminal Justice and a minor degree in Psychology from Michigan State University. For 32 years I worked for the Michigan Department of Corrections. The last 17 of those years, I worked in their training division. This is where my teaching life began. I also worked as an Adjunct Professor at Lansing Community College for 12 years. It was at the college that I learned firsthand the shortcomings in English education, and I felt strongly that better English skills makes better college students and better employees. This is where my drive - to help students to master the concepts - began and continues until this day.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have been involved in teaching and/or training for well over 25 years. More specifically, I have taught Sunday School for middle and high school for over 20 years, and have taught Bible class and Christian conferences for over 10 years. I have taken 2 years of classes through two Christian Colleges with plans to obtain a Bachelor's Degree in Christian Education.

English

I am a graduate of Michigan State University, and even though my degree is not in English, English is and always has been my best subject. I have been teaching honors and college prep English for the last 5 years. Prior to that I taught at a community college for over 12 years. I also was a training manager for over 17 years. In addition to training as a training manager, I also wrote, edited, and proofed training manuals.

English can be challenging for a lot of people, and that's why I like to assess the area of need and then address it at the student level. This is the benefit of teaching versus tutoring.

Literature

Currently teaching High School honors and pre-college English. Our program is designed to assist student with college board examinations and prepare for college course work. I have been teaching this program for 5 years.

I have a Bachelor's Degree from Michigan State University in Criminal Justice and a minor in Psychology. In addition, I taught at the community college level for 10 years, and trained professionally for over 17 years.

Public Speaking

I am a public speaker with over 30 years of experience. I have utilized these skills in many different types of venues including; Bible study (30 years), community college (12 years), conference speaking (25 years), training for the largest department within state government (17 years), and currently teaching middle and high school English (5 year) My college degree includes a Bachelor's of Science Degree with a minor degree in Psychology.

Writing

This is my fifth year as a full-time English instructor. I teach both middle school and high school in a curriculum designed for college bound students. Prior to this I was a training manager for over 17 years. In that capacity, my writing included technical writing such as policies and procedures; educational writing such as curriculum/training modules; and creative writing such as poems and short stories. Currently I am completing a full manuscript for my first book.
