My name is Valerie F., and I am passionate about English! I currently teach English (Literature, Grammar, Reading, and Creative Writing) to middle school and high school students. I have taught in this setting since 2010 until the present. My love is helping students move from "I hate English" to "Oh, yeah!!! English is cool!!"
I like to use different methods in English education, but most of all I love to involve the student. No more dreary lectures, but hands on learning which makes the time go by and which helps not only in the learning process, but also in the application of grammar concepts. Working from sentences and sentence construction, I will teach the parts of speech which are essential to the passage of college exams. I like the Abeka curriculum which uses as its guide the SAT and ACT exams.
I have a Bachelor's of Science in Criminal Justice and a minor degree in Psychology from Michigan State University. For 32 years I worked for the Michigan Department of Corrections. The last 17 of those years, I worked in their training division. This is where my teaching life began. I also worked as an Adjunct Professor at Lansing Community College for 12 years. It was at the college that I learned firsthand the shortcomings in English education, and I felt strongly that better English skills makes better college students and better employees. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I am a graduate of Michigan State University, and even though my degree is not in English, English is and always has been my best subject. I have been teaching honors and college prep English for the last 5 years. Prior to that I taught at a community college for over 12 years. I also was a training manager for over 17 years. In addition to training as a training manager, I also wrote, edited, and proofed training manuals.
English can be challenging for a lot of people, and that's why I like to assess the area of need and then address it at the student level. This is the benefit of teaching versus tutoring.
