In my 20 years with the Clark County School District and 8 years in Gifted Education, I have discovered the secret to content mastery in any subject is to make the content live, first by showing its application and then by breaking down its component parts to gain subject understanding. It is always my objective when working with my students to ensure they fully grasp the content whether it be understanding the 5 properties of every verb (person, number, mood, tense, voice) or why negative times negative is positive. I constantly strive to ascertain whether the student truly understands the material by using formative assessment in every lesson. If the student does not comprehend the concept, we go back to the point where it became nebulous and start again.
I believe every student can learn if given both the motivation and the requisite scaffolding to master whatever content material they are considering. I make it my business to build confidence in my students that they can master even difficult or abstruse content if they make the effort to focus and believe in their own success.
I can work either in a student's home, in a public forum such as the library or even in my own classroom. Whatever is most comfortable for my students work best with me. I do look forward to working with you and beginning that quest that will end with student subject mastery. Kevin has been tutoring my 10 year old son for a few weeks now and I have seen a big improvement. He is prompt, patient, thorough, and teaches in a relaxed and fun way. I highly recommend Kevin.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My experience with elementary students extends 20 years back to the 10 years I substituted for the Clark County School District, then to my 3 years teaching 3rd grade and finally to my 7 years as an elementary gifted and talented education specialist. I have been tutoring elementary, middle and high school students now for 7 years and the subjects range from English to math to the various sciences. I specialize in American History, most notably the Civil War era for which I teach Adult PDE (Professional Development Education) for CCSD. I work with patience, tact, and perseverance to ensure my students understand my lessons. I use formative and summative assessments to provide data for my students, their parents, or other concerned parties.
I also teach what are called "Push In" classes where I go into 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms and teach advanced mathematical skills to the students in preparation for middle school and beyond. These same skills could be brought to bear with your daughter.
As a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University English Writing program, I have taken courses in all facets of writing from Creative fiction to news reporting. As a Gifted and Talented Education Specialist, I add a writing component to all my units, for example my 4th grade students now are composing stories, narratives and news articles about antebellum America.
In my 20 years with the Clark County School District including 10 as a substitute teacher, I have taught every grade level from kinder to 12th grade. I have also tutored extensively in remedial reading for below grade level students which includes phonemic awareness and phonics. I use the lessons and methodology of the Florida Center for Reading Research as my primary lesson reservoir. These lessons are all inclusive and progressive as students cover the requisite areas leading to reading proficiency.
I have been working with middle school students in pre-algebra now for some 10 years and can work to ensure above grade level understanding of algebra concepts.
