About Greg

My love of teaching comes from my family. Both of my parents were college professors. My father taught journalism and my mother taught sociology. It was instilled in me that we all have a civic duty to our community and that duty is best applied via education. In addition, I have always loved literature and creative writing. My minor in college was English, and I am also very active in the Las Vegas poetry scene. I recently worked with teachers at Valley High School providing assistance with the annual poetry slam in which young minds are allowed to express his/her self in a creative fashion.

By combining my formal training in English with the creative component of free expression, I feel I can bring a flexible and diverse knowledge to assist kids in tackling areas in English that are challenging. I believe it is imperative that educational opportunities be provided through a variety of approaches and avenues that sometimes are needed to supplement the public school system. Class size often prevents students from getting the one-on-one attention he or she needs to excel in a given subject. Tutoring can provide a bridge to those gaps and often invigorate and excite a young mind that maybe frustrated at the complexities involved in the English language.

I graduated with a 3.56 GPA and was fortunate to have been a member of multiple honor societies. However, I believe my growing up in a household where education was stressed and encouraged is my strongest asset. The rewards I have experienced in assisting people in the arts has inspired me to branch out into the youth in the Las Vegas area.

My experience with tutoring has been primarily assisting others in the art of creative writing. In addition, I have tutored youth in the sport of soccer. My credentials for tutoring English are that my major in college was communications and specifically broadcast journalism. This required extensive work writing in the AP style format. My minor in English required to become familiar with academic standards in regards to papers, styles and length.

My personal approach to tutoring is to listen. In other words, I feel one must understand where a student is in regards to his/her understanding prior to being able to assist him or her. I feel that no one learns exactly the same way and this is taken into account for each individual student. Tutoring affords one the time and opportunity to make that happen whereas teachers class size often limits such an approach. The ages I have worked with most recently, at Las Vegas ArtReach, were 10-13. The youths I worked with in Soccer were age 8-10.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

My major was Broadcast Journalism and Public Speaking was a requirement. In my most recent job, as an Outreach Specialist, one of my main responsibilities was to speak in front of large groups to educate them on the non profit group I represented. I am an active member of the Las Vegas Poetry scene and perform in front of public audiences on a weekly basis.
