In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have lots of experience teaching phonics, reading comprehension and study skills. I use phonics with the beginning readers. To improve comprehension, my students read passages then answer questions about what they read. We discuss the readings as we go along.
I have been tutoring phonics to K-6 students for almost a year (starting in January 2012). At first I tutored Clark County (Nevada) School District students in the No Child Left Behind program. Now I tutor private students. I have developed study techniques for each individual student. For example, some of my students have trouble reading without getting lost. I teach them to use a sheet of paper to mark the line they are reading and to move it down the page as needed. I have taught some students to read their assignments twice, the second time keeping in mind the questions that need to be answered. With each student I formutlate study techniques for them and I change these as needed as I observe their work as they progress. My background in psychology helps me gain insight into each student's behavior and to adapt study skills for each individual student.
I provide my students with text passages that will increase their vocabulary based on whatever level they are at. I encourage the students to ask questions and I explain words that they do not know. I point out how the text gives clues as to the meaning of new words. The more a person reads, the more vocabulary they learn.
