I have been tutoring for over six years. I have been an elementary teacher for 17 years. As such, I have experience in teaching reading, writing and math skills, along with science, literature, and most other classes offered in the elementary, middle school, and high school areas of study. I earned my Bachelor of Education at the University of Hawaii, Manoa Campus, my Masters of Science was earned at Utah State University, and I earned a certificate to teach English as a Second Language from Weber State University in Utah. My Master's degree is in Education, with an emphasis in Gifted and Talented. I taught in public schools in Salt Lake City, Utah and for a private school here in Las Vegas. I have a music background, and have taught private piano lessons to beginning students.
I believe everyone can learn, when given the opportunity to develop sufficient background in an area. Learning grows from previous knowledge, and when that previous knowledge is missing, it requires effort to build enough background to comprehend the current necessary learning. Students often want specific aid in current class assignments, but the required assistance will come from tracing the history of learning, and discovering where the gap in that knowledge lies, and constructing sufficient background knowledge to allow the student to successfully complete school assignments independently. My goal, then, would be to assist you to gain enough understanding and self-trust to no longer need my support, allowing you to achieve success in your class assignments and activities on your own.
I have had much experience with many world cultures, as my husband was active duty Navy for 21 years. We lived in Guam, Alaska, Hawaii, and Gibraltar, as well as in the United States. This, and the experiences of my own children, has given me an understanding of cultures, and the struggle to fit into a new culture successfully. I have been tutoring for over six years. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As an elementary teacher of 16 years, teaching every grade from Kindergarten to 6th grade, I have had experience with all subjects taught within these grades. I have specialized in teaching reading and writing, and have my Gifted and Talented endorsement.
Reading, writing, and math are vital to success in any subject within the curricula of an elementary student. For this reason, I have a strong belief that writing should be included in any subject in which there is a need for special help. There is a connection between the hand and the brain, and until the hand has written something, the brain often does not know what it knows. For this reason, writing is important when working through new subjects, or information that seems to be difficult.
My experience with students is varied, and extensive. I have taught in public and private settings, and tutored children at many levels. My students are challenged and stimulated to learn. Students who entered my classroom with less than positive attitudes later thanked me for the experience of learning to love learning and the challenges I provided for them.
I received my BEd. from the University of Hawaii, my MS from Utah State University, and ESL certification from Weber State University.
As I taught my elementary classes, I noticed that there were students who struggled, due to an unfamiliarity with the English language. These students, though intelligent, struggled with familiar subjects because they were unable to comprehend instruction in English. I worked to individualize instruction for these students, in order to provide them with a successful experience in my class, and an opportunity to develop their English skills. After several years, I determined to formally complete training in instruction of students who needed help in this area. I encouraged our staff to complete this training, as well, and we were able to bring the instruction to our building.
Since I gained this valuable information, I have participated in ESL instruction with children and adults. I utilized it in my classroom instruction, and have taught ESL to adults in a variety of settings. Among these were classes for specific industries and Community College instruction. My students are challenged to gain language ability in every sense: speaking, reading, writing, and pronunciation. Pronunciation can be a specific challenge to some students, and can hold them back in career advancement and interpersonal relationships. For this reason, I regularly include pronunciation exercises as part of class curricula.
I have worked with several students, helping them to build their skills and pass the GED test. It is important to know that the key to passing most tests is an ability to read and understand the passages and the questions. After that, the math, writing, and English are important. I can help you with each section of the test.
I have been musically inclined since I was a small child, playing piano, french horn, oboe, and various other instruments. I took piano lessons for many years. Though I never became a concert pianist, far from it, I have learned the rudiments of piano playing, technique and music theory from my many music classes. While taking classes at Leeward Community College, I worked on technique and theory.
I have taught beginning to intermediate piano lessons, teaching students from age 6 to adult in musicality, piano playing, theory, and technique. I have taught piano lessons for about 3 years. My skills as a professional teacher come into play as I aid students in gaining the basic skills needed to be a proficient pianist.
As a professional educator, I specialized in helping children learn to love reading. The children I taught became better readers and found the joy of reading. I took every opportunity to better myself as a reading educator, participating in workshops and classes, including a 2-year long reading project.
Since leaving the classroom, I have been able to develop both reading skills and a joy of reading in both children and adults. For me, reading is both a great pleasure and an important necessity for learning, and a joy to help others gain these same skills.
As an educator, I have had much experience helping youth and adults as they develop their skills and abilities to write. I believe that one cannot really know what they know or believe until a person writes that down. I find it enjoyable to help others better communicate with others.
