Singapore Teachers Training College (EdD)
I am a retired school teacher. My teaching career of 32 years in Singapore and California has given me many challenges and satisfaction among students achieving success in their studies. I am also qualified in teaching special education students. In Singapore, I taught first grade thru 5th grade students in all subjects. English has always been the main language for the Singapore students. I was also the second language teacher, which was Malay, for the 5th graders. In the earlier years of my teaching career in Singapore, majority of the students came from non-English speaking homes and that was a real challenge for me teaching the English language, compared to teaching in the United States. However, by the end of the students' school year, they were able to speak and write English, which gave me a sense of great accomplishment then.
My major in college is English, therefore, teaching reading, comprehension, grammar and writing are my strongest and best subjects. In California, I taught in Elementary school as a substitute teacher , when i first came to live in the States. Later, i was an assistant resource /special ed teacher to 1st grade thru 5th grade students. During those years, besides teaching in the school, i home tutored many students, after school hours.
I now live in Henderson, Nevada and have been here for the past 13 years. I was employed as a tutor in a couple of tutoring centers during my first few years living in Nevada. However, being a tutor in an organized institution , did not give me a chance to know the students well and not enough time spent on each individual student, since there are 2 to 3 students per tutor, within one hour. Besides that, the curriculum is set by the institute, which i find that does not help the students in their grades, because its not really catered to their individual needs. My method in tutoring is to have one on one, student and teacher. Therefore, this way, I am able to get to know my student's weakness in their subjects and help to strengthen his or her learning difficulties or disabilities.
Most of my past students in home tutoring for English, have passed with excellent grades and that gives me great satisfaction that I have accomplished my job in helping students achieve their studies.
I have a pleasant personality and lots of patience and I enjoy being a tutor very much. My days and hours are flexible and will try my best to accommodate students' time as well. Looking forward to hearing from you and plan to help you in achieving your education goals. I am a retired school teacher. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
First of all, my second language in Elementary through high school was Malay/Indonesian, therefore I am fluent in this language. Secondly, I passed the Standard 2 Malay in my teaching college, that qualifies me to teach this language to students in school. When I was teaching in Singapore, I was the the second language teacher, teaching Malay/Indonesian to 5th grade students in the
school. My teaching curriculum for this language consists of learning objects, simple sentences, translating from English to Malay/Indonesian.
I have had many years of experience teaching Phonics to students in school, and also home tutoring a five year old student currently.
A beginning reader needs to know certain concepts in order to differentiate letters and to read. To be taught, left to right, up and down; round and straight; alike and different. To identify sounds of letters, especially vowels, consonants, then being able to identify beginning sounds of various words, for e.g. dog, it starts with duh, the beginning sound of bug is b. Later, introduce blending, which is putting letter sounds together and saying the resulting word or syllable.
