University of Nevada Las Vegas (Computer science)
Hello everyone! My name is Keith. I'm currently enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas as a computer science major. I graduated in 2014 near the top of my class (29th) from Liberty High School with an advanced honors diploma. My long term goal in life is to make video games, but I also enjoy watching people grow in knowledge. My mother taught sixth grade english at Silvestri Junior High School. As someone who came from a teaching background I know the impact a good teacher has on a young mind. I know how crucial it is to understand the style of which people learn information. My mother always emphasized on getting to know a student on a deeper level and try to implement exercises that fit a student's learning style whether it be: visual, auditory, tactile, or kinesthetic. I put myself under extreme pressure to accommodate the learning style of the student to fit my teaching style. I know that a good teacher always generates high expectations of oneself and of the student. My overall goal with tutoring others is to help them make their lives as easy as possible when it comes to learning what they struggle with.
I used to tutor my friends in high school privately and they produced results. I brought one of my friends from the brink of failure to an acceptable B in algebra 2. When I first started off I always paid attention to where the student believes that they have trouble the least in a particular area of a particular subject. It's far less difficult and time consuming to focus on quick fixes. After that I start to focus on harder and harder areas of the subject. Whichever subject I teach to a student I know they will deliver the results they want to see. I don't believe in giving homework as a tutor because that creates problems for the student's workload. It also creates unnecessary stress which takes away from performance in class. I'd rather give small assessments of knowledge to make sure the information registers with the student. The best way to do that is for me to generate ten to fifteen questions at the end of the session. I don't grade anything I just check the answers and go over missed questions. I'm effective with any age group from elementary to college students. My communication and teaching skills are to the highest degree. I'm flexible with traveling. If desired outcome is not met I will charge a quarter of my hourly rate until such expectations are met. If cancellations or reschedules need to happen I would appreciate a twelve hour notice beforehand. I am available to contact at all times of the day. To ensure minimal distractions I prefer to do all sessions at the closest library, but that decision is ultimately up to the student. I'm here to make the student's life easier, and if that means doing sessions at a location of the student's choosing then so be it! I look forward to helping you get to where you want to be with your studies!
Algebra 1 has always been a thorn in the side of most students; however, I was not one who had much trouble with it. Algebra 1 grades are usually determined by how it is taught to a student. If taught with the right style of teaching students will generate better results. I always ask how a student prefers to learn so I can give them the least amount of difficulty to understand the material.
Biology is another subject that has come to me quite easily. I excelled in advanced placement biology in high school as a junior. Although my major doesn't require me to take a biology class at UNLV I can still teach it, provide small intricate projects, as well as generate small quizzes to test the knowledge of my student.
Grammar has always come easy to me. I have a well developed vocabulary and I also read for leisure sometimes. Rarely will you find me committing a grammatical error in any of my papers as well as textual communications. If there is one thing I can teach it is grammar!
I will always teach according to learning style. If you'd rather take notes and hear me talk then I will do what I need to do to accommodate the student. I will make sure that my students succeed in all that they are taught and if they are not satisfied or if they don't get the results they desire I will bill the student a quarter of my hourly rate. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As someone who had great teachers who could convey information thoroughly and effectively in high school I easily got through algebra 1 as well as biology and AP bio with exceptional grades. I know how to get information across to a student and communicate effectively. I believe in adapting to the learning style of the student so that processing the information I provide becomes easily understood. I don't provide homework because I know that adds to the workload as well as stress to the student. What I do is I provide small to medium sized assessments of knowledge to see how well the student has done over the time of the session. If the student/parent is not satisfied with my tutoring I will more than gladly cut my hourly rate to a quarter of the cost until such expectations are met. My goal is to have the student comprehend and be able to decrease the difficulty of the student's ability to call on information learned in class as well as sessions with me. I'm extremely helpful when it comes to giving tips on how to take more useful notes and perform better on tests. I place heavy expectations on myself to deliver results and will always take the student's considerations into my overall methodologies and teaching strategies.
