About Frank

I have devoted the past 18 years to being a pro journalist, Brazillian Jiu Jitsu black belt (and coach) and a public relations consultant.

I worked as a news reporter for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, The Salt Lake Tribune, as an online Managing Editor for FOX5 News and as a correspondent for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. But what truly distinguishes me from most tutors is my passion and enthusiasm for writing, speaking and songwriting and my ability to have that visceral passion rub off on others. I'm good at getting others excited about writing and speaking -- which is essential to them reaching their maximum potential.

I graduated from the University of Maryland and wrote for the school's top-tier daily newspaper, but I never took a single journalism class in college. Not one. So as a journalist and professional writer, I am largely self-taught, which happens to be true of most of the great writers in history. Being self-taught has its advantages: I feel much more creative and free from the formula writing that is so common but results in writers lacking a distinctive or unique voice. What's the point in writing if you're going to sound like everyone else? Be you! Express you!

Another advantage: Because I don't rely on systems or formulas as heavily as others, I am very open-minded and flexible when I teach. I can find and improvise outside-of-the-box solutions that might be the key to unlocking a student's potential or sparking his/her interest in the subject. When people teach from a book or regurgitate the theories of others, and the student isn't retaining the information or is disinterested, then what? It pays to be innovative and trust in your own power to find solutions. My journalism career and conducting thousands of interviews have taught me that people have very different ways of thinking, learning, perceiving and processing the world. What inspires one student may not work for another. So the best tutors and coaches are masters of the mind, not just techniques and theories. And figuring out people from the neck up, as well as making education fun, is what I do best.

Thank you for reading and all the best!

Frank

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Fitness

After nearly a decade of training, I was awarded a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2010 from 6-time World Champion Robert Drysdale. I have won three World BJJ titles at the masters level and coached adults and kids in the famed martial art. I was a team captain in high school wrestling and football and was recruited to a Division I collegiate wrestling program. I have run a 5:08 mile, scored in the 99th percentile in number of consecutive pushups and dips, and have two decades of experience at cutting weight for sports.

Martial Arts

I hold a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and have won nearly 260 matches in BJJ and wrestling competitions. Twice I have earned bronze medals at the IBJJF World Championships (brown belt level) and I have won three world titles in the masters division. I accumulated a 34-4 record my senior year in high school, winning county and regional titles and placing third in the Maryland State Championships. I was recruited to wrestled Division I at the University of Maryland and have coached kids and adults in wrestling and BJJ.
