English has always been my best subject. In high school I took AP Language and Composition as well as AP Literature, so I am well aware of the standards that are required in those courses. I am also familiar with the material that is taught in those courses, and am able to apply that material to my tutoring. I have also taken several English courses so far at UNLV, and am going to continue taking them throughout my college career. I have tutored many students from various age groups. For example, I have tutored children who are ten years old, as well as many sixteen year olds. I have also tutored several college students in regards to writing essays and formulating arguments, and so on. My tutoring methods are completely based on the student and their learning methods. I acknowledge that everyone learns differently, which makes my tutoring strategies vary.
My goal as a tutor is to provide the student with the ability to excel in all areas of English. In regards to comprehensive English, I will teach them how to read prose; in fiction this means identifying plot, conflict, time, point of view, setting, characters, theme, and so forth, as well as how to distinguish tone, purpose, and organization in non-fiction. I will also help them with identifying parts of speech, punctuation, and spelling. In regards to writing, I will help the student formulate arguments, write in an organized and clear fashion while maintaining a formal style, as well as forming a proper conclusion. I will also be able to help the student write about literature, which entails giving them the ability to draw connections between life and literary works. Some other areas that I will help the student in are writing about informative/explanatory texts, as well as writing narratives.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
