About Teague

After retiring from teaching adults and high school students for over 27 years I decided to become a tutor in selected subject areas.

If a student seeks me out and I determine that I can genuinely help that student attain very specific goals we spell out together, then I accept the job. I do not profess to be a miracle worker. If, once a student and I agree to the initial face to face meeting, I will administer short tests on my laptop to the student to pinpoint weaknesses.

For example, if a student scores at the 5th grade level of math and is trying to pass the Nevada High School Math Proficiency Exam, I will not accept them as a customer. Why? Because there are too many lost years of knowledge required for me to be able to tutor them sufficiently to be able to deal with the level of math on the HSPE in math and I cannot and will not guarantee I can help when I already know there is not enough time.

If we enter into an agreement, my tutoring lessons are structured to meet the objectives within the timeframe we have agreed upon. If at any time I see a loss of commitment or interest, I end it. There is no point beating a dead horse.

I expect students to be rested, alert, prepared, on time and willing to put forth the effort, otherwise let’s not waste each other's time.

I also require at least 24 hours’ notice of a cancellation of meeting or contract. NO EXCEPTIONS. I can fit another student who needs help into that time slot if I have sufficient time to make all the necessary contacts. If you cause me to burn that hour or two I bill you anyway.

Finally, before you are totally convinced that I am a pompous ass, please read this. If I determine that you or your student can be helped and I agree to help, I guarantee my results. If I fail to meet the objectives in the time agreed to I will refund full amount (100%) of any money you are billed through Wyzant. That includes the percentage they take in addition to the percentage they pay me. I will do this out of my own pocket.

I’m not cheap, but that is because I am an expert. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Business and a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Now all you have to do is ask yourself one simple question. Do you want a 100% rock solid guarantee of what you are trying to accomplish or do you want to roll the dice and take the cheap way out. Your clock is ticking.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Accounting

My undergraduate degree is in finance and accounting and before I became a teacher full time I was an accountant for many years.

ADD/ADHD

During my years as a licensed teacher I had numerous students with IEP's placed in my classroom and NEVER was unable to meet the requirements specified in every IEP I was provided for students with disabilities, including many with ADD/ADHD.

I attended several professional development classes addressing better ways to assist students with learning challenges.

Business

I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business from the University of Nevada and prior to becoming a licensed teacher worked in the field of business with companies such as IBM, American Express, Maximus Accounting Firm, Ormsby House Hotel and Casino.

I have taught accounting at the college level, and personal finance, business law, and business communications at the high school level.

Career Development

As a licensed teacher, I taught Careers to students at a youth correctional facility located in Las Vegas, NV for four years. I assisted these juvenile offenders with guidance and advice on how to create resumes, cover letters, how to complete job applications, and how to search for jobs of interest using various online resources including Nevada's online job search site.

Computer Science

I have taught Computer Applications and Computer Science at the high school level for several years. In addition, I taught Computer Litercy to grades 6-8.

I have an Authorized Instructor certification from Microsoft, and I have learned and written working programs in two programming languages.

I am expert at diagnosing and resolving problems associated with computer/laptop operations.

In addition, I am expert at identifying and removing viruses, trojans, spyware, malware, whatever you want to call it, I have the tools to get rid of it without causing the computer to stop working.

DOS

I have taught DOS to adults in the past and still find myself using the familiar "command prompt" to execute both internal and external commands.

Dyslexia

I have had 13 years teaching children who suffer from moderate dyslexia. My ongoing professional education as a licensed teacher provided me the opportunity to further my knowledge and understanding of how to offer quality instruction to children with dyslexia.

I have always been known as a very patient, understanding and confidence building teacher and I am committed to the success of every student.

Elementary (K-6th)

Prior to becoming a high school teacher I was licensed to teach at the elementary level, which I did for more than 18 months. I have also successfully been certified by WyzAnt in Elementary Math and Elementary Science.

In addition, since retiring from full time teaching, I taught phonics, site words, and comprehension skills during the summer session in reading for the Institute of Reading Development.

I thoroughly enjoy teaching the younger students because they are so quick to learn and the satisfied smiles on their little faces is why I got into teaching in the first place.

My current teaching license is valid until 8-1-2018.

ESL/ESOL

Although teaching an ESL student the English language is different from teaching it to a native speaker, I am certified to teach English, Writing, ACT English, and SAT English (Reading and Writing), Spelling and Vocabulary.

These skills will make it that much easier for you to learn English because I will bring all those skill sets together to help you be successful.

Mr. B.

GED

Success on math exams is largely due to some important parts. One is knowing the right way to take the test called test-taking strategy. I will teach you this.

The other is being able to breakdown a problem and fully understand what information is being provided and exactly what the question in the problem is that is being asked.

The people who write these tests know many will not read the whole problem and consequently select the wrong answer, which by no small coincidence is one of the possible choices. I will teach you how to avoid this nasty little pitfall also.

Test-taking is 35% art and 65% knowledge. You be master both with me.

Handwriting

I am a trained expert with the Palmer method of handwriting. I have several years experience teaching this method to younger children.

The Palmer method teaches you how to write in a uniform way with rhythmic motions.

Learning to write in legible cursive is an important skill today and I am able to teach a beginning or intermediate writer with only a small amount of practice.

The Palmer method is an award winning skill and is still widely used by millions who learned it.

Marketing

The Bachelor's degree I earned from the University of Nevada included several marketing courses at which I excelled. So much so that I was hired immediately out of college as a Marketing Representative with the IBM (International Business Machines) corporation. My career with them was so successful that after several years I was able to purchase and double in size my own accounting firm, which I later sold for a substantial profit.

Microsoft Access

I completed extensive training on Microsoft software including Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook and earned the Authorized Instructor credential from Microsoft.

I taught these subjects as Professional Development courses for nine consecutive summers to licensed teachers, administrators and support staff needing credits for license renewal or pay advancement.

The Web site I used for these training classes still is available today.

Microsoft Excel

I have earned the Microsoft Authorized Instructor certificate in all Office software.

I use structured exercises and files to facilitate rapid learning and mastery of the topics requested.

Microsoft Outlook

I completed extensive training on Microsoft software including Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook and earned the Authorized Instructor credential from Microsoft.

I taught these subjects as Professional Development courses for nine consecutive summers to licensed teachers, administrators and support staff needing credits for license renewal or pay advancement.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I am an Authorized Instructor for Microsoft Office. This which means I have completed extensive training on Microsoft software. The titles include but are not limited to Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook.

Microsoft Windows

I completed extensive training on Microsoft software including Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook and earned the Authorized Instructor credential from Microsoft.

I taught these subjects as Professional Development courses for nine consecutive summers to licensed teachers, administrators and support staff needing credits for license renewal or pay advancement.

Phonics

One of the most recent projects I have undertaken since my retirement from full time teaching was with the Institute of Reading Development. The primary goal of the Institute is to improve the reading skills of students at all levels and phonics instruction is a very, very important part of the curriculum.

Teachers help the younger students learn the relationship between letters and the sounds that they stand for. This knowledge is essential for a child to successfully learn to read.

Praxis

I myself have sat for and successfully passed several Praxis tests, and my oldest daughter, with help from me practicing and preparing for the Praxis tests, has also sat for and successfully passed several Praxis tests.

I am very familiar with the types of preparation necessary for a person in order to be able to do their very best on the exams.

Strategies include test taking strategies because so many people simply do not read the entire question and just as importantly all answer choices.

Prealgebra

I have been teaching Pre-Algebra as a Guest Teacher in the local district for several years now (Clark County School District). Although I retired from active, full-time teaching I still accept long-term assignments when Algebra teachers go on maternity leave, which including Pre-Algebra.

Public Speaking

I have earned a M.Ed. degree which included coursework in Public Speaking and Business Communications.

I enjoyed several years as a member in good standing of the public speakers club Toastmasters International during which time I achieved the rank of Distinguished Toastmaster.

I have accumulated countless tips and suggestions I have collected over the years that help make someone a better public speaker.

QuickBooks

Until about a year ago I was a Quickbooks Pro Advisor for Intuit. I decided to discontinue my relationship with them because the demands of multiple clients became too time consuming.

In addition, I taught QuickBooks for the College of Southern Nevada.

Reading

Many of the students I have tutored in Reading and English have made significant improvement on the exams they are preparing for.

Reading can be a very enjoyable experience, and once a young person realizes that there are other worlds to be explored in those books and that the key to discovering those worlds is through reading, it begins to become a lifelong habit.

That is what I strive for.

Religion

I attended parochial schools from kindergarten through high school. Parochial school teaches not only Catholicism, but other mostly Protestant religions as well, including Islam. In elementary school we learned the Old and New Testament and in high school we learned about the history and origins of numerous religions in the Middle East, Far East, and Europe.

While working towards my master's degree, I became interested in the plight of American Japanese during WWII and took a course which addressed this and consequently learned a significant amount about the two major religions in Japan, namely Shinto and Buddhism.

During the three years I resided in West Germany, I was drawn to the history of the Jewish religion and people and took University courses from the University of Maryland in Germany to learn about the horror and mistreatment of so many millions of people because of their religious beliefs.

Series 63

While working for American Express Financial Advisors I studied for and passed the first time the Series 63 exam. Thanks to a mentor assigned to help me I learned that the best way to successfully take and pass the Series 63 exam is to read and study the material from a study guide and then to take practice exams (preferably more than 1) until you are consistently scoring a 95% or better on those practice exams.

In addition to the importance of learning new material, is the test-taking strategies I will teach you during our tutoring sessions. These strategies will help you attain the highest score possible.

Lastly, as you progress through the material, and take practice exams along the way, I will continually offer you encouragement to bolster your confidence in yourself and your ability to pass this challenging exam the first time.

Special Needs

I have been a licensed teacher in the State of Nevada for 18 years and during that time I provided assistance to numerous students with special needs, including autism, ADD and ADHD, aspergers syndrome, visually impaired, and dyslexia to name a few, dozens of whom were on Individualized Education Plans (IEP) or 504's.

I worked with a co-teacher in several of my courses to provide additional assistance to children suffering from learning disabilities and special needs.

I have enrolled in and completed several Professional Development Education courses during the course of my career that pertain directly to aiding and assisting students with special needs and other various learning disabilities.

I am very, very patient, understanding, and I offer lot of encouragement to help rebuild the self confidence of students with special needs. My experience and commitment contribute to a successful outcome for students with special needs.

Study Skills

As a licensed teacher, I taught Study Skills to adult students at an Adult Education facility located in Las Vegas, NV for two years. I assisted these students who had dropped out of high school and were full time employees in the workforce and were returning to school in the evening to attain a high school diploma.

These students were taught the importance of finding a time and place to study and getting homework, materials, and study space organized to make the best use of study time. The learned the importance of note taking and how to do it to improve their performance in school. Students were also provided with concrete suggestions about how to study, managing the stress of working and attending school with family responsibilities, proper planning to meet all challenges and probably most important getting an organized calendar of events.

Swimming

I swam on a competitive swim team while in high school, and won numerous medals for placing in various swim events.

While serving in the USAF overseas in Germany, I joined and swam competitively on at German swim team because of my proficiency with the language. I also won several medals while on this team as well.

Later, when I was attending college, I was a lifeguard, swim lesson instructor, and eventually pool manager.

During my time as pool manager, I started a swim team at the pool I worked at, and successfully coached the team and taught several kids the proper competitive swim strokes.

TEAS

The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is a 170 question pre-entry test used to evaluate the academic preparedness of students in Math, English, Science and Reading entering a variety of medical related career paths including but not limited to Dental Hygiene, Practical Nursing, or Registered Nursing Program.

The exam closely resembles the GED, SAT, ACT and Praxis tests.

Video Production

I have used Adobe Premiere Pro and TechSmith's Camtasia to create training and demonstration videos since 2007 as a means of making it possible for my students to further review skills learned in class.

I have also put those sames skills to use to create professional videos for various business enterprises.
