About Robin

I am a recently retired licensed Special Education Teacher with over 20+ years of progressive experience serving infants, toddlers and students in grades K-12 with a broad variety of developmental issues. I also had the opportunity to teach Special Education Kindergarten and the KIDS program. I am an extremely compassionate and patient person who acutely attunes herself to children’s individual academic functioning, emotional/affective needs and diverse learning styles. I have been recognized by multi-disciplinary education teams and parents as a gifted, creative and nurturing teacher. My extensive background includes working with children with Autism and Aspergers Syndrome in addition to children who are nonverbal or experience difficulty in receptive and/or expressive language skills. I can teach and communicate the fundamentals in sign language. As a Learning Specialist at The Children’s Hospital in Colorado, I presented departmental in-services on teaching strategies for children with ADD/ADHD. I served on the educational panel at the Rosenberry Conference, providing expertise to national cross-disciplinary mental health and educational professionals on instructional methodologies for children with Aspergers Syndrome.

I simply love what I do!

Elementary Math

I have found that making learning a fun experience increases the student's rate of progress, which is a direct indicator of success. For math, I use a hands-on approach and the Touch Math system. The students that I have taught and tutored enjoyed using manipulatives as a learning tool. They consistently demonstrated increased motivation and confidence in their skills and achieved higher grades.

ESL/ESOL

In February of 2010, I completed a 15 hour course in Explicit Phonics. This course was given by the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, NV. This course was specifically designed for teachers who had English Language Learners/English as a Second Language students in their classes.

Phonics

As an undergraduate, I earned a BA degree in Elementary Education. Phonics and reading were a major component leading up to the degree. I have also participated in and completed a district-wide phonics program provided by the Clark County School District.

Praxis

I am a licensed teacher with over 20 year's experience. I have tutored and facilitated study groups for the Praxis exam. I am very familiar with the exam and was required to take it myself in order to become a licensed professional in Nevada.

Reading

I use the Explicit Phonics system, which has been endorsed by the Clark County School District.

I hold a Masters Degree in Special Education from Hunter College in New York. I have taught Special Education Kindergarten in Nevada for the past 4 years. Children in that program have a variety of developmental issues.
