Hello! My name is Gary and I would like you to have a better idea of who I am and why I enjoy tutoring. Following high school I attended a 4-year college and received a Bachelor's degree in Biology. Although my original intent was to enter medical school, I realized that my true interests lay elsewhere. I found what I consider to be my true calling when I subsequently received an Associate's degree in Electronics Technology from my local community college.

I then transferred to a 4-year college, from which I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering. As with all engineering degrees, the courses were very math-intensive and I grew to appreciate the importance of mathematics. While working on my degrees I also realized two things. The first was that motivation truly determined how successful a student could be. The second was that the instructors with the most interesting and motivating classes were those who truly loved their subjects and teaching them to others.

Although I was a class teaching assistant in high school my first official tutoring experience began when I formally tutored mathematics subjects for my community college. At this time I also began an ongoing association with a publishing company, during which I reviewed and provided supplemental material for their electronics textbooks and laboratory manuals. While working on my engineering degree I participated in the tutoring assistance program with Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society, and taught electronics and programming courses part-time at my former community college.

Because I've had the advantage of both studying and teaching subjects I've been able to develop methods that effectively organize and present course topics while recognizing and addressing the practical difficulties that students can face. Central to this is ensuring that students have a solid understanding of underlying concepts rather and identifying fundamental issues than simply addressing specific and isolated difficulties. I will never rush through a topic and will always take the time to resolve any issues that students have with one topic before proceeding further.

I've always enjoyed mathematics, and many times almost view it as a game to be played and enjoyed. Not everyone views math the same way, but I think that success is the best way to appreciate any subject. I'm certain that I can help students having difficulties succeed, and encourage them to find the satisfaction that comes with success.

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I have extensive educational and professional experience in higher math subjects that require a very sound working knowledge of math basics such as Elementary Math. Specifically, I officially have tutored a variety of math subjects, taught math-intensive college-level courses, and routinely applied basic to advanced mathematics in my engineering career.
Reading

Reading

My basic qualifications in Reading were meeting the reading competency requirements for admission to and graduation from the two colleges I attended. Later, as an engineer, reading comprehension was vital to my successful job performance. I also have worked professionally as a technical editor and author, during which time my job duties included reviewing, correcting, editing and supplementing company documents and publications.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I completed math courses through linear algebra and differential equations while earning my degree in Computer Engineering, taught college-level courses in Electronics and Computer Science, and am qualified to tutor math from grade school arithmetic to pre-calculus.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

My college preparation and engineering studies required courses in algebra, plane and solid geometry, trigonometry, math analysis, differential and integral calculus, linear algebra, and linear differential equations. In addition, I have taught college-level courses that required knowledge and presentation of higher math concepts.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

As part of the educational requirements for obtaining an engineering degree I've taken mathematical courses covering pre-algebra in middle school, algebra through analytical geometry (pre-calculus) in high school, and calculus through linear differential equations and linear algebra in college. As a community college instructor I've taught and assisted students with pre-algebra, algebra and trigonometry concepts as part of basic dc and ac electronics courses. I've also tutored introductory math courses in community college while completing my pre-engineering program and participated in a math tutoring program for the local middle school sponsored by my engineering employer.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

As part of my college preparation curriculum in high school, I took Analytical Geometry (pre-calculus) in senior year. Subsequently in college I took Calculus I and II, linear algebra, linear differential equations, and discrete mathematics to complete physics and engineering courses and to satisfy my engineering degree requirements. Following graduation my employment has required extensive practical application of all these courses to fulfill my job requirements.

Gary is awesome

Gary takes time and allows the student to ask questions and is not rushed. He has worked with my sons in math for a little over a year and half and my oldest son was able to pass the math portion of the GED without issues. Gary has improved my boys confidence in their math skills. All in all Gary knows his stuff, is patient and well received. I’ll be using him as much as the boys have need for a math tutor. Well done, Gary.
