About Shirlina

Having a son with Asperger's Syndrome, I have learned various ways to tutor. Understanding a child's learning style and teaching the best way for them, even if it is "outside of the norm", allows children to grasp various concepts at their own level. It also teaches them how to process in various ways, allowing them to find the one method that best suits them when the time comes.

I currently have an Associates degree from the University of Phoenix with a concentration in Psychology. I am also a senior standing student at the University of Nevada Reno with a major in Psychology and a minor in Philosophy. Currently, I am in the process in receiving my substitute teaching license. Originally I was an Electrical Engineering Major, but when my son was diagnosed as High Functioning Autistic, I realized that my passion was within him.

Previous job positions include a certified 911 Medical Dispatcher, a certified EMT, and various management positions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

Having a child with Asperger's Syndrome and having had Asperger's myself as a child, I believe I have a better understanding of how their brains process, function and "think" per say. I have been an Autism advocate for 5 years, starting support groups, fundraisers, and basic training in what Asperger's Syndrome is versus full Autism. Having been in higher end psychology classes that work with the APA's DSM-IV, I was required to write a 35 page dissertation regarding Asperger's and its many facets. Social skills and basic understanding of them tend to be the most difficult part for children that are high-functioning Autistic. It's a day in/day out work in progress that can last a lifetime but being as educated as possible on the subject allows for some ease to help them learn at their own level.

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently hold an Associates of Liberal Studies Degree and I am in my senior year at the University of Nevada Reno completing my Bachelors of Psychology. I am a tutor in the Early Childhood Autism Program, working in every educational realm with special needs children. I carry a minimum of 30+ hours of basic education ranging from English and History, to Math and Science. I have tutored children from the age of 6 to adults (college students). Most of my experience comes from tutoring my high-functioning Autistic son who is now 11. I will be applying for my Nevada substitute teaching certification this July. I believe that my experience in tutoring both special needs and non-special needs children with my current education will allow me to have a head start with WyzAnt students.

Reading

I am qualified to teach reading, English, and K-6 elementary which I believe all incorporate within each other for this position.

Study Skills

Having been in school for as long as I have (long-term college student), I have experienced and learned various forms of study skills. Also, having a child with Asperger's Syndrome, it has helped me to think outside of the box while helping his mind to comprehend the different forms of studying. I use various methods depending on the child's most effective way of learning. Some work best with rehearsal or rote learning (memorization skills) while others can use a PQRST method through reading and listening. Many use cues with flash cards or keywords and others, acronyms and mnemonics. The key is to question, test, and tap into the best learning method for each individual child. One thing I do stress in all sittings in time management and organization. These are keys to learning successes all around.
