About Marilyn

My mission is to help each elementary through high school student I tutor reach for the stars by recognizing and capitalizing on his or her strengths, while tackling the areas of academic challenge. As my student begins to understand and experience success, an irresistible love of learning will be fostered. Areas of academic challenge, such as math, science, or reading, will no longer be perceived as distasteful subjects, but as proficiency is gained, excellence will be achieved. My sound academic background in science, with major coursework in English, coupled with experience tutoring one-on-one and in and out of a classroom setting has prepared me well as a successful tutor.

For the past 6 years, at a tutoring center, I instructed students and inspired learning in a classroom setting and worked closely with parents tailoring curricula to meet individual needs. We focused on core subjects of history (U.S., world/ancient and modern), literature (classical), and sciences (geology, anatomy, botany, zoology, astronomy, matter and motion, oceanography). Students in the program ranged from those with learning disabilities to the very gifted. I presently tutor one-on-one a refugee teen in English (reading and writing), math, science and social studies (for 2-1/2 years). It is extremely rewarding to see this young man mature, and gain confidence and pride in the learning that he is achieving. I have been privileged and blessed to home school my three children successfully for the past 11 years, through high school. I chose to do so because I desired to foster a love of learning in each, and help them achieve their dreams. The oldest just graduated with honors from UNM. Each child has excelled academically in all core subjects with particular strengths in writing, reading, and reasoning/critical thinking. It is rewarding to see them develop into thoughtful, focused, articulate scholars ready to “take on the world”.

I have tutored all three math subjects over the course of the last 11 years and have enabled students to gain confidence and mastery over arithmetic and algebra. My approach is more hands, step-by-step, "cook book" than theory,

I think that reading is foundational to all areas of learning. Of those who learn to read well, most will find that that they love to learn. There is some sort of freedom, independence and confidence that a student gains as he or she steps into the world of reading; there are so many wonderful works of literature one can choose. I have had the privilege of teaching 4 year olds to read before kindergarten so that they could "hit the ground running" once they got into the classroom. I think that the reason that so many students detest math is because of word problems. Imagine not having to struggle with the reading aspect of those. What a confidence builder to have the reading mastered! Another major strength of mine is writing. My students have the 5 paragraph essay complete with thesis statements, transitions, topic sentences, etc. mastered in middle school. Most will be writing at college level by 8th grade. I can help students use grammar to "dress up" their sentences; grammar will no longer be a headache, but a tool, a friend which will foster excellent writing.

Other subjects I teach include, but are not limited to geology/earth sciences, physical sciences, astronomy, anatomy, botany, zoology, matter and motion (elementary physics), history (U.S., World (ancient and modern).
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I can't wait to meet you!

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. References will be provided upon request.
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Marilyn H.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Classics

I have taught classical literature to elementary and middle school students over the past 11 years. We learn to identify, discuss the 5 elements of literature which include character, style, setting, theme and plot. We engage in Socratic discussions whereby the instructor asks rhetorical questions which prompt the students to examine, explore, contemplate, analyze and apply the complex themes and interwoven plots of each literary work. Often the students follow up with essays from a given related topic such as, "Discuss the character traits of Long John Silver and how these impact the plot of Treasure Island" While my academic degrees are in the sciences, I began my undergraduate major in English and thus completed substantial coursework this subject area, including literature and writing.
Included in the three year classics rotation I taught was the study of the following works:
William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, and Henry IV Part I
Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island and Kidnapped
Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe
Howard Pike's Men of Iron
Mary Mapes Dodge's Hans Brinker
Ivanhoe by Sir Walter Scott
Tolkien's The Hobbit
Silas Marner by George Elliot
Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens

Each classic was studies over a period of one school quarter wherein students read and analyzed the text, were assigned associated vocabulary, completed essays, acted out characters and performed plays (for Shakespearean works). In addition, they were weekly quizzed and given quarterly exams consisting of short answers, identities, and extensive essays related to elements of literature applicable to the books.

Elementary Math

My approach to elementary math tutoring is very hands-on. I patiently work with the student to take each problem, performing computations step by step. I have 11 years of experience tutoring elementary math through Algebra 1. My students have excelled in higher math due to the solid arithmetic, geometry, prealgebra, and algebra foundations I have provided them. The student will gain confidence and master multiplication, division, adding, and subtraction and the order of operations in their utilization. We will work through long division, rounding numbers, learn prime numbers and their application to factoring. I will clarify and drill exponents/powers and square roots, factions and decimals, percentages, graphing -- line, bar, pie, Cartesian, solid and plane geometry. Also in my expertise are data analysis and probability, measurement--metric and imperial units, elementary algebra, areas and volumes, temperature conversions and units of time.

Geology

I hold bachelors and masters degrees in geology and geological sciences and have taught geology to middle school students over a 6 year period and also to university students teaching physical geology lecture and lab. Lab exercises and lectures included earth structures, petrology, mineralogy, geomorphology, stratigraphy, paleontology, geologic time, catastrophism vs uniformitarianism, seismology/geologic structure, plate tectonics, weathering, volcanism, geologic mapping and map interpretation, and many more topics. I have led various geologic field trips including the world class El Malpais lava tubes area in western New Mexico. I am excited to use my solid academic and teaching background to make geologic concepts come alive for my students.

Homeschool

My strong educational background complete with bachelors and masters degrees, work for 11 years as a home educator and 6 years as a classroom teacher and tutor working at a center for home schooled students has made me well qualified to tutor home schooled students. I have taught elementary arithmetic, prealgebra, algebra I and geometry, classical literature, world history (ancient and modern), U.S. history, geography, Spanish 1 and 2 and various sciences (physical sciences, biology, astronomy, and more).

I successfully home schooled my three children from kindergarten through 12th grade. Each learned to read at age 4 before kindergarten started and has performed (as evidenced in standardized testing) at the top 2 to 10% of students in their age bracket. The oldest has graduated with honors with a bachelor's degree in just three years. The middle son is an excelling engineering student in a top-notch California university. The third child is a academically strong high school student doing very well and now taking college level classes at the local community college.
