I taught "officially" for three years in an elementary school setting (mostly math, theater, and music), and for three years at a high school, though I enjoy working with all ages.
In college I majored in Physics and Philosophy, and I studied a great deal of Math, Piano, and Literature. I also have training in the mechanics of paper-writing.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I taught elementary school for two years. I understand the particular needs of this age group, and especially 8-10 year olds.
I have a great deal of experience teaching math and music to this group. I show my students how to do the math, rather than forcing them to memorize rules that have no meaning for them. To do this, I use physical representations of our number system (blocks and tiles for all of the basic mathematical operations, including fractions).
I also have experience with helping this age group to write and read.

I have been playing piano since age 7. I was classically trained by a very strict older woman, and because of that experience I try to be more relaxed with my students!
I have been teaching piano lessons for about 10 years now. I have experience teaching all ages, from 4 up to 60. I like to include some creative composition work in my lessons, so that students learn not to just engage in rote memorization with the music.
In short, my lessons include music theory, all sorts of songwork, and composition.
