Hello, my name's Gabriel! I've always had a curiosity about new areas of knowledge, and I enjoy making connections across disciplines and relating concepts to the real world. I graduated college with a major in chemistry, a minor in math, and coursework across physics, engineering, computer science, philosophy, classics, and English. Next, I spent two years doing scientific research at a national laboratory.

I have tutored college-level chemistry, mentored a 9th grader one-on-one for a year, and coached middle and high schoolers in speech and debate. I found that I loved it! I enjoy seeing students understand concepts and then connecting the material to their own lives. Drawing on this experience and my educational background, I've found that I learn and teach better when I connect concepts analogically to real-world events and personal interests. There's a certain thrill to seeing how geometry manifests in videogame design, or how principles of chemistry are mirrored in sports events. Once that connection is made, abstract or difficult subject matter becomes accessible in a way that's not enabled by normal word problems or homework. More than that, seeing these concepts in the world around us creates a good feeling of control and power that comes from understanding and making connections.

For example, I love seeing geometry all around me. Because it's fundamental to our understanding of 3D spaces that we navigate every day, there's no shortage of examples! Geometry matters in sports, in videogames, in driving a car, in setting up a new lamp at home, and in getting astronauts to the moon. Students often have trouble with geometry because they're taught a bunch of formulas and weird words like, "cosine," applied to bland triangles and circles with no connection to the real world.
I find that something as simple as talking about an access ramp that a grandparent in a wheelchair uses, as opposed to a triangle, brings the geometry and the physical interpretation of the equations to life.
