About Andrew

Hi! My name is Andrew, and I've been tutoring or teaching for the last seven years. I started tutoring in 2008 at my University, where I was a professional Chemistry and Calculus tutor. There I received the Tutor of the Year award in 2011, and from there branched out into being an Economics grader and Math Department tutor. Following my graduation, I worked as a calculus teacher at my old high school and with a professional private tutoring company in San Jose, CA specializing in students with special needs such as ADD, dyslexia, depression, or other special circumstances. I have also completed all coursework on getting an ESL/TESOL certification. In short, I am a highly qualified instructor with stellar reviews.

“That's all well and good,” you might say, “but who IS this guy?” Well, about me personally, the first few things you'll notice are this: I'm an unabashed nerd, a remorseless punster, a kind and typically cheerful individual, and there's not much that lights up my face more than that “aha!” moment when a student understands something and realizes that they can do it. As time goes on, you may learn that I have a love of hiking and ballroom dance, that I've enjoyed traveling fairly extensively, and that whenever possible and with an interested audience, I will somehow try to tie zombies into whatever I'm doing. To sum up, as a person I'm a kind, quirky, silly but patient fella.

On the topic of my tutoring methods, I'm well versed in a variety of ways and means. Some of my favorites are explaining verbally, through metaphor or otherwise, drawing on paper or whiteboards, and above all, the Socratic method. It is my philosophy that people can do just about anything if they put their mind to it, and as such, insofar as possible, I won't show someone how to do something. Instead, I'll ask questions and gently lead them to show them that they ALREADY knew how to do that same thing, and all they needed was a little confidence, and maybe a gentle nudge. That said, if someone feels completely lost, I'll gladly and happily go over the concepts again, doing some example problems, until they feel confident enough to try something with guidance or on their own.

Finally, it's my belief that learning should be fun. Sometimes it's a slog, which I admit, wading through two pages of algebra homework isn't many people's idea of a good time. But there's no reason to have it be super serious business; a few jokes every now and again go a long way to making work bearable, and even fun. I'll frequently share little tidbits about the subject matter that I find cool and, in my experience, even when students don't share my enthusiasm, they can at least be amused at it.

In conclusion, I'm a highly qualified professional with an easy-going and relaxed personality, a penchant for humor, and a belief that each and every student has within them the ability to succeed; all it needs is the right circumstances to allow it to blossom.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C++

I took one year of C++ in college, and was top of the class. Furthermore, I have since used it on a few personal projects. My tutoring methods mostly involves diagrams showing memory storage, and detailed walk-throughs of written code to find any bugs in the program or show an interesting piece of architecture.
