Hi! I have enjoyed working with young people from the start of my career as a nurse many years ago until today as a tutor. Most recently I have been a home schooling tutor. Not everyone fits the mold of the educational system and I believe that everyone has their own unique way of learning. I also believe that learning can be approached in ways that make it interesting and even fun. Usually, I am able to connect with my students in a way that they feel supported with understanding and without judgment. Most of my students have become friends and have gone on to become successful in their lives, in whatever area of life they choose.
Additionally, I am a published freelance writer and one of my strong points is in language arts. I love tutoring in this area. Hi! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have enjoyed my experience as a home school tutor, covering all subjects from K-12th for the last eight years. I have recently been an elementary school tutor in the public schools for the federally funded program "No Child Left Behind" since October of this year, as well as a tutor for the elementary grades with Community FaithLinks, an Albuquerque agency. I find my work with young children to be most satisfying.
I studied classical piano for several years in my youth. I am presently teaching beginning piano to young people. My teaching style, and communication skills make it fun and easy for my students. I also sing with a choral group and am able to perform complex compositions.
Phonics refers to the system of the relationship between letters and sounds. When the child learns this relationship it is helpful in reading and spelling. Knowing the sounds of the letters and their combinations allows the child to decode words as he or she is reading and know what letters are involved when writing. Phonics is usually taught from K-Grade 2, and sometimes through Grade 3, depending on the learner's needs. Some children with dyslexia benefit from additional help.
I have experience working with young children as well as children with dyslexia implementing phonics as the foundation of reading and writing.
I have been tutoring young students and an occasional adult in the art of beginning piano. I studied classical piano for several years, starting around the age of six. I am especially patient and understanding with young children just starting to learn to play piano.
