I was a teacher for 35 years: K-12 and taught at the University level where I was a Teaching Assistant and a Teacher Supervisor. (My job was to evaluate and assist new teachers at all levels.) My major was History/Government at the secondary level. I later became an elementary school teacher. I enjoy teaching and tutoring students in Language Arts, Reading, History, Social Studies and other Elementary School subjects. I create fun lessons and add creativity to each lesson I provide or help the student with. I was the supervisor and teacher for many after school programs which provided tutoring help for students at all levels of competency. I have always been able to make my lessons fun and easy to understand. I always consider a student's learning style and include their capabilities when creating lesson plans.
I taught summer school for many years which emphasized help for students who had had a difficult time during the school year. It was wonderful to have small classes which enabled me to help students on a one to one basis.
I have also been a bilingual teacher and a bilingual supervisor. I am able to help students who are struggling with the English language. I was able, with my bilingual skills, to help students transition into classes where only English was the primary language.
My main strength is teaching Reading. My classes have always scored high in reading at the end of the year.
I am now an author who has published four books. I would enjoy helping students with their writing skills.
My minor in college was art and art history. I have taught art classes at the middle school, high school and the YMCA.
I really like working with students, so I am looking forward to my tutoring assignments. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am certified to teach K-12. I have taught for about 30 years in this specified area. I have also taught in the Education Department at the University of New Mexico.
I have been a bilingual teacher and a regular classroom teacher at the elementary level. I was the supervisor for the after-school program which emphasized tutoring help for students in grades 1-6. I created curriculum for summer school programs which enabled students to pass classes which they had failed during the regular school year.
I created curriculum for reading programs within the Houston Public Schools.
