About Yoko

Yoko is a native speaker of Japanese - Born in Wakayama, Japan, on July 3, 1961. Very unique and independent child from the beginning. Loved singing, but she didn't know her potentials until she met a *Shigin teacher when she was in 6th grade. She had never had this life changing experience before.
In those days, not many kids would ever want to learn the songs of this kind because kids don't usually even know how to read the poetry written only in Chinese characters called Kanbun. The Shigin teacher, Mr. Fuyuki, said, "Yoko, just try to recite the way I taught you tonight. Don't worry. Nobody expects you will be good at it from the beginning. If you don't feel comfortable, don't push yourself to do it. Nobody will blame you. You are just a kid."
She did. In front of some 15 adults, she did it very well. From then on, it looked as if her future life as a Shigin teacher/performer had been nailed. The life, however, is not that easy. She practiced Shigin anywhere and anytime - in the open air every night, or in futon... She became better and better. By the time she became a high school student, Yoko won too many (to others) trophies and prizes, which made adults frustrated and jealous. "As long as Yoko stand up on the stage, she takes away all the prizes! We have to think about how to get rid of her!" That's exactly what they did.
Yoko left them behind. She didn't regret it. She couldn't stand almost all adults around her trapped a 16-year-old girl and harmed her. Yoko had to seek for an alternative so she would be able to be unique and independent for the rest of her life. At that moment, she was very versed in Kanbun, of course. She had memorized about 500 Kanbun poems written by various Japanese and Chinese poets. She was versed in Japanese classics because she was very familiar with historical incidents and those backgrounds depicted in those poems. Yoko chose English, NOT Japanese. She decided to make her own living by teaching English.
Right after she became a college student at 18, majoring American English, she started tutoring English to middle schoolers and high schoolers. During her graduate school days, Yoko finally got an official jobs at several private prep-schools and cram schools, teaching English to elementary school students in addition to those students mentioned above. Plus, she started to teach Japanese to Americans, who taught English conversation to Japanese adults at private language schools in Japan. She accomplished the professional seminar hosted by National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics. Thus, Yoko has taught thousands of students (This is NOT an exaggeration at all. A normal class size at Japanese private prep-schools is about 200, most of which were to drop out by the time of college entrance exams in February and March. Yoko is NOT a liar.) in Japan.
Since she came to the US in December 1998, she has taken more than 20 - 30 part time/full time jobs for the living. However, it is only teaching/tutoring English and Japanese that has made her stand out. Yoko knows thousands of "good students" and "bad students" with different personalities and family background. She has her own style in teaching, but what makes her stand out in teaching is her impeccable integrity. She has an ability of seeing through the quality of people. She always loves to see her students grow. Testimonials will prove it all.
Thanks to the latest technology, Yoko can extend her expertise to her prospective students, who are anxious to learn Japanese language or English, all over the world.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

I was raised in Japan, where even public school students get very strict math training. Thanks to the Japanese educational system, an average Japanese person like me can teach math to the students with math problems in US, where teachers don't really know what kind of math problems they have. I have experience in tutoring lots of elementary and middle school students in math in this country, which tells me where the students tend to stumble over it! Your student will make a drastic and significant improvement only within a couple of weeks if s(he) studies with me! Guaranteed!

English

I taught English to Japanese high school students over 20 years, especially English composition, which comprises the major part of the college entrance exam in English in Japan, is my top expertise. There are the national prep exams for college entrance exams in Japan. I was in charge of "English Composition" section. My English composition skills were that highly appreciated. In the US, I continue teaching English and Japanese to both Japanese students living in US and Americans. I have over 10 years teaching experience in US.

Handwriting

I was born a good handwriter. My cursive can impress everybody. When I taught English in Japan, I could write English like an art. But I was asked to write English and Japanese in block because my cursive was too beautiful. Last, but not least, I won in numerous Japanese and English handwriting competitions in Japan.

Japanese

I am a native speaker of Japanese. Also, I have been teaching Japanese for more than 10 years since 1998 in US. My students includes adults from all walks of life, college students, high school students, middle school students, elementary school students, and toddlers with their moms. I have taught individuals, small classes, and large classes at local community centers. You name it! You will regret it if you don't learn Japanese from such a highly experienced teacher as me.

Martial Arts

I have more than 10 years of Karate, Okinawan Kobudo, and Judo experience. Right now I practice Judo 5 days a week. I even help my instructor teach the Police Force in Albuquerque and Sandoval County. Some of them were so impressed with my techniques and skills, plus manners, that they signed up with my regular class at night. My instructor is so thankful for me recruiting new students.

Phonics

I taught English in Japan for more than 20 years. Mainly for college prep. English I taught covered Phonics, Grammar, Composition, Reading, and Linguistics. I love studying foreign languages and have studied more than 20 languages so far, including English. Although English is not my native tongue, I believe I know a lot more English grammar and phonics than educated Americans do. I have teachers' certificates in English from a Japanese university. So, I can officially work for middle schools and high schools.

Prealgebra

When a student struggles in prealgebra, it is most likely that he doesn't drill enough numbers of questions after understanding how to solve them. From the private tutoring experience in Tuscon Public Schools (AZ), I have seen my students progress in prealgebra very quickly. In my proven teaching method, students will usually see their "results" in prealgebra only after a couple of tutoring sessions.

Reading

I have an English teacher's certificate for Middle School and High School students from a university in Japan. I started to tutor/teach English when I was a freshman at college. Since then, I have 20+ years of teaching experience in Japan and 10+ years of teaching experience in US.

Special Needs

Although each student has different study needs, there are some needs in common. When I worked at Doolen Middle School in Tucson, AZ, I tutored more than 20 students with different problems on site. I took them out one on one from their classes to the library. Combined with the needs I was requested to meet by their teachers, I identified their individual needs immediately and fixed all the problems so they would be able to catch up with other students in class.

Study Skills

When I was a graduate student at University of Arizona, I was hired by Tucson Public School District as a teaching assistant and a tutor for the students with the problem of studying skills. I taught them Math, English, Social Science, History, and so on. My teaching especially in math was really appreciated because I didn't just teach how to solve the problem but also taught them how to study in any subject. The test scores of all students I taught drastically improved within a couple of days. The principal at the Middle School, where I worked, thankfully said that I was so reliable and asked me to work for them forever!

Voice (Music)

I am a semi-professional singer. I have 40 years of singing experience in Japanese Traditional Poetry Singing called Shigin. In this field, I won in so many competitions. Also, I compose songs. In this field, too, I won many competitions when I was a middle schooler. Since I came to US, I have been taking professional voice training to become a professional singer. I sing as a volunteer at several occasions for public.
