United States Naval Academy (Physical Science)
I am a retired Naval officer and teacher. I was in the Navy for a 26-year career which included diplomatic tours in the Philippines and in Venezuela. After retiring I chose to become a teacher because of my love for learning and love of working with children. I was and still am a certified teacher in the State of New Mexico with endorsements in mathematics, science and language arts. I have taught physical science, chemistry, and AP chemistry at the high school level and earth and physical science at the middle school level. I have taught general math and algebra I at the middle school level. algebra I was taught as a high school credit course. I am a National Board Certified Teacher having completed my boards in 2009. I recently retired after 16 years.
I have specialized in tutoring both math (prealgebra and algebra I) and science (physical sciences and chemistry) as these subjects are often the most difficult to understand. My tutoring style is a combination of both hands on creativity and skill repetition depending on the student needs and learning style. I am flexible and while teaching will adjust my approach to that of the student's style. This seems to make the most effective combination for improving student achievement.
Being retired my schedule is very flexible and as such only require a two hour notice to cancel a session with the student. My concern is for the student and not necessarily my time.
Being flexible, I will tutor in the best possible location for the student. That is a public location, your home or my home.
I look forward to helping you achieve the results you desire.

Jeff is helping my son in algebra 2. He is the 4th tutor we have had in the last 2 years. Jeff by far is the best. I only wish we would have found him 2 years ago.
I recommend Jeff to any student struggling. He is awesome and my son really enjoys his methods of teaching.
This past session we were working on the math section of the test. The ideas and information he gave me is improving my confidence.
With just the first lesson he has helped me become more confident already with the areas I have trouble with.
Jeffrey is helping me to think through the problems better and has given me some great pointers for solving problems and taking tests. Thank you!!
He helped me learn more about the topics I need to know about. It was a good lesson and I feel more prepared for the topics now.
Jeff consistently goes above & beyond to help my son understand the chemistry and geometry material he is learning. He is always punctual, uses every minute of our time teaching and is very positive. Jeffrey is an excellent tutor who tailors his approach to meet the needs of the student. He teaches in a way they understand, grasp it easily, and they begin to excel at their work. Jeffrey tutored my daughter for the ASVAB and after 7 sessions she took the test and passed it with a much HIGHER score, which assisted in the job she selected. I recommend him if you have a child struggling in math or any subject. Hire Jeffrey for tutoring and you will not be disappointed and you will see progress and confidence improve in your child.
Jeffrey knows how to get through to my 13 year old to help him understand math. He has really done a tremendous job! Jeffrey is patient, easy to reach by phone or email. He has taken the time to understand how my son learns and has molded the tutoring lessons so that my son gets the most benefit from his tutoring. My son likes Jeffrey and looks forward to his lessons. Thank you, Jeffrey!
Mr. L. is an excellent tutor. My 13yr old son was having great difficulty with Algebra (multiplying and dividing radicals) and had significantly fallen behind. My son took a test and received a 20%! He had a tutoring session with Mr. L. and was allowed a retake on the test, he achieved an 80%! Mr. L. was great at figuring out where my son was having difficulty and why. Mr. L. even had my son laughing through the lesson. Mr. L. not only understands the language of math but also how to teach it to his students. He was extremely patient and emphasized working out the problems, using the formulas and taking good notes. My son was not thrilled with having to be tutored but he really liked working with Mr. L.
My son was not taking notes, and continued to try and do the math in his head. Needless to say he found himself not understanding the next chapters of Algebra to the fullest and although he was barely passing he could do better. I called Mr. L. and requested a tutoring session with very short notice. Mr. L. was easy to reach by phone and was available for another tutoring session. I would and I'm sure I will be calling Mr. L. again in the future when my son needs help with math. If you or your child is struggling and needs a tutor in Math I highly recommend Mr. L. Thank you Mr. L.
Today was my first lesson with Jeff and wow I am beyond thankful to him! I've always had a fear of math and didn't think I would ever be able to even begin to understand it and Jeff changed all that. He is truly a great tutor, patient, understanding and knowledgeable. Very thankful to him! Thank you so much Jeff!!! Looking forward to my next lesson. God bless.
Jeffrey has been extremely helpful to my daughter. Today was her fourth lesson and it was wonderful to see a smile of confidence on her face. She stated that today she finally feels like it makes sense to her and she feels like she can do it without fear of not knowing what she was doing and that she would never understand algebra. He has worked at her pace and teaches algebra in a way that makes sense to her. I appreciate him giving my daughter back the confidence to go to her High School algebra class.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
