I am a Master's level teacher with 35 years of teaching experience. I have taught at the K-8 levels, and have tutored students of all ages, including college level and adults. I am now retired and very excited about the chance to work one-to-one with students and help them become confident, successful learners.

I have taught in public and public charter schools, and my most recent experience is that of a Reading Specialist, Literacy Coordinator, and Reading Recovery Teacher. I have conducted teacher trainings and trained reading tutors while in these positions, but my true love is in working directly with students and parents.

Prior to becoming a Reading/Language Arts Specialist, I taught children with Learning Disabilities and other learning differences both at elementary and middle school levels. As a part of my role, I taught reading/spelling/writing strategies, as well as test taking strategies and social studies test prep at the middle school level. I also did pull-out work in which I supported students in all academic areas. In addition, at various times during my teaching career, I have successfully tutored college students and adults in helping them to pass classes and prepare for tests.

I believe I am especially good at motivating students, determining their strengths and need areas, and zeroing in on what they they need to be successful in school and in life. I use on -going informal assessment to guide my teaching and am happy to provide parents/grandparents with suggestions for working with their children.

I would like to branch out into guiding and consulting parents/grandparents in homeschooling situations. I can also serve as a liaison for parents, communicating with the schools, and /or sitting in on IEP meetings and teacher conferences.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a joint degree in elementary and special education (K-12). I was an elementary and special education teacher for 16 years in Iowa and specialized in teaching children with learning disabilities. Part of my experience was in a pull-out resource room program, including working with classroom teachers to provide strategies to meet children's needs in the regular classroom. I received an M.A. as a reading specialist at Western New Mexico University. During my last twelve years of teaching, I worked as a literacy coordinator and reading/language arts specialist in K-6 and K-8 settings in New Mexico. This included working individually and in small groups with students and conducting trainings with teachers in how to "follow the child" and make learning meaningful and relevant for all children in the classroom setting.
Phonics,

Phonics

As a reading specialist/teacher and literacy coordinator, I have a strong background in teaching and integrating phonics into the reading process. I have also done trainings with classroom teachers in how to teach phonetic skills and strategies and integrate them into the teaching of reading and spelling in the classroom. I am also experienced in doing phonics evaluations and providing suggestions for parents and teachers in how to best help the individual child. I also have a great deal of experience teaching and tutoring students in this area.
Reading,

Reading

Reading, I have learned through the years, is an integration of skills and strategies based on a child's learning style, background of experiences, and individual needs. It is a process in which "on-going-assessment as one teaches" is crucial in meeting individual needs. Much relatively recent research has been done based on observing and studying what "good readers" do as they read. This knowledge can be applied to working with struggling readers with amazing results. As a Reading Recovery Teacher and Reading Specialist/Literacy Coordinator I have taught many children/adults with success and have done trainings with teachers in using this approach. Motivating and helping children to become excited about reading is also a critical component.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I am a recently retired teacher, having taught in Iowa and New Mexico. During my career, I took classes and was certified in teaching study skills and test taking strategies. In my years as a middle school special education teacher, K-8 literacy coordinator, and reading specialist, I also served as "testing coordinator". I feel all of these experiences have provided me with strategies to help children and adults learn and put into practice effective study skills.

English

English,

English

During my years of teaching, I have tutored quite a few students, junior high to adult, in English. I also have a strong background in teaching writing, grammar, and spelling. I am also certified in teaching "Sentence Writing" and "Paragraph Writing Strategies", both programs developed at Kansas University. I have found that being able to work with a student in a one-to-one tutoring situation, concentrating on his/her individual strengths and needs, is very effective.

As a reading and language arts specialist, I can assess student needs and build a program to successfully teach you or your child the necessary writing skills and strategies. One of my strengths is in motivating and creating excitement about writing. I especially enjoy making learning meaningful and building on already existing strengths while I work on "need areas".

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

As a Learning Disabilities teacher, I have had a great deal of experience in working with children with attention deficit disorders, with or without hyperactivity. I gear my teaching to the child's specific needs and learning style(s}. In many cases a multi-sensory approach using hands-on materials is helpful and effective. I can be flexible and creative in coming up with specific techniques and approaches to help your child increase attention and focus.

Special Needs,

Special Needs

I have thirty-five years of teaching experience, all of which has been geared to teaching at-risk students. I began my career in Iowa teaching in one of the first programs for children identified as having "learning disabilities". Some of the time, I saw the students in pull-out resource programs, working with individuals and small groups in all subject areas. Other times, I did team-teaching in the classroom. For the most part, my work was at the elementary level, but one of my satisfying jobs was team-teaching reading and language arts at the middle school level for four years. The classroom teacher and I did the planning together and tailored the lessons to meet the needs of the specific students. I went back to school to get a Master's as a reading specialist because I believed many of the students I saw in special education programs were there because of their needs in reading and written language, rather than having a real "disability". After moving to NM 15 years ago, I became a reading specialist/teacher and literacy coordinator. In this role, I worked closely with special education teachers and did pull-out for reading/writing with some of the students. One of the highlights of my career was becoming certified in teaching Reading Recovery, an early intervention program for the students most at-risk for failure in reading and language arts. I learned to apply these techniques and strategies to older students and found this to be very successful. I am recently retired, miss working with children and adults, and would love to continue doing this on an individual basis. I look forward very much to working with you or your child.
