About SONIA

Math is a subject that many struggle with. I was "turned on" to math by an 8th grade teacher who let me work at my own pace. By the end of the first semester, I had completed the entire book. I wasn't hooked on phonics; I was hooked on math!

I taught 6th and 7th grade math and algebra to bilingual students. Our bilingual students (math and language arts) helped our school achieve a passing grade. The algebra class was offered as an elective. There was a waiting list of students requesting to enroll into this class. I am currently teaching Developmental Math 101 and Developmental Algebra 102 at the college level (both face-to-face and on-line). I am also teaching GED studies at a state correctional facility. I have an 90% passing rate on the students' first attempt.

My goal is to help students relate the mathematical concepts they are learning to real-life situations. When math makes sense, it is easy and fun! Regardless of the concept(s) we are working on, I will keep the student engaged and motivated. One method I use is by providing instruction in several strategies on who to arrive at the correct answer. I guide the student in choosing the method that makes sense to them.

I have 15 years experience teaching math, pre-algebra, algebra, and math for health occupations. I have learned the "book way" of solving a mathematical problem. I have learned many, many "short-cuts" on how to solve a mathematical problem. My students have also been some of my best "teachers". I have tutored and am currently tutoring students in all the subjects listed above. At the university, I have many former students who come to me for tutoring because they all say "I learned best from you". They even come to me for tutoring in College Algebra, College Reading, College Writing, and English 101 and 102.

I have and set very high standards for myself. I will provide supplemental materials to assist students in their learning process. I will try to be flexible with time. I would ideally like to have a 24-hour cancellation notice, but I know "life" can throw us curve balls at any time. I will ask for students' and parents' feedback to guarantee satisfaction with my tutoring services and to improve my tutoring skills. I prefer to tutor students at a library. This is an environment that is conducive to learning. However, I am willing to travel to another location for the convenience of my students and parents. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Criminal Justice

I have taught Adult Basic Education/GED classes in a state correctional facility for the past 16 years. I also tutored two students at the university who were pursuing an on-line degree in Criminal Justice. One student received a BS in Criminal Justice, while the other received an MA in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in Criminal Justice and Public Administration.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a masters in teaching (K-8). I taught for four years in middle school. I taught summer school in a multi-level classroom (grades 2-5). I have tutored students from 2nd grade to 10th grade through the school district's homebound education program. My instructional methods include the use of worksheets, manipulatives, on-line lessons, and individual student's books. In total, I have fifteen years teaching experience with approximately the same number of years tutoring.

Study Skills

I taught 6th and 7th grade for two years. These students were taught basic study skills to include notetaking, time management, reading with highlighting techniques, and outlining just to name a few. While working with the Peer Mentor Program, I conducted workshops and provided training for the peer mentors who were employed thru my office. The inmates/students I currently work with have no study skills. Each student must complete a comprehensive lesson on study skills-across-the curriculum. This is a lesson that I developed using the Kaplan 2016 GED Study Guide.
