About Justin

I am a firm believer in individualized learning styles, and the underlying premise that no subject is inherently difficult, so long as it is presented in a digestible way. This means recognizing and offering multiple approaches to problem-solving. I am deeply passionate about the process of learning, and find it extremely personally fulfilling to help others achieve confidence and awareness of their own academic potential.

My name is Justin, and I am a recent graduate of New Mexico State University, where I earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry, along with minors in biochemistry and biology. The last 2 years of my undergraduate career, I worked as a laboratory research assistant, and also as a Supplemental Instruction Facilitator. Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an internationally recognized academic support program that offers regularly scheduled study for difficult core courses. Sessions are targeted towards improving student grades and understanding, while increasing enrollment, and reducing attrition.

As a facilitator, I instructed up to forty students, maintained an academic grade book, and was required to uphold the same teaching protocol as faculty. I attended lectures with the students to take notes, model good student behavior, and prepare tailored curricula for my own classroom sessions. In addition, I identified and implemented various learning styles, created lesson plans, worksheets, and lectures, and developed collaborative group activities. I have been a facilitator for General Chemistry I, General Chemistry II, and Organic Chemistry I. Many students stayed with me through this sequence.

The foundation of my tutoring philosophy was established through involvement with the SI program, and has been refined over time. I believe in an interactive approach that relies on asking the appropriate questions to lead the student to the answer gradually, by first connecting concepts, and then relying on the student to explain a stepwise solution to me. I have applied this approach effectively and pragmatically to instruct multiple high school and college students across a variety of academic disciplines.

CV available upon request, along with multiple university faculty, student, and parental references. I promise to respond quickly to any questions or comments you have, so please do not hesitate. Thank you for your consideration!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have taken through university-level Calculus 2.

Organic Chemistry

Have taken Organic Chemistry I, Organic Chemistry II, Organic Laboratory, and Physical Organic Chemistry. I have also taught Supplemental Instruction courses in Organic Chemistry.

Simply the Best!

Fantastic! Incredibly patient and by far the best resource for explaining difficult organic chemistry concepts. The amount of knowledge needed to do well in organic chemistry felt overwhelming, Justin narrowed down the main concepts of each unit in way that made it easy for me to learn and remember for my exams. He will be the only tutor I’ll be using in the future!
