Education is a top priority of mine, which is why I'm hoping to help others make the most of theirs. Sometimes, it can be especially challenging, and when you need help for yourself or your child, don't be afraid to ask for it. With my certification, experience with teaching and kids, and my degree, I'm well qualified in several areas and would very much like to know how I can help you!
I hold a certificate in TESL that involved several courses in the English language as well as language teaching. I prepared lessons as projects, was tested on grammar and pronunciation production, and presented materials to my classmates and professors in a classroom setting. We also shadowed at a school, and participated in activities with elementary schoolers.
My TESL Certificate was great training, but my most extensive teaching experience came from teaching English in Korea. I created my own lesson plans, activities, games, and worksheets and instructed classrooms of students between the ages of 4 and 15. I taught vocabulary, grammar, phonics, pronunciation, handwriting, and stress and emphasis. Also, during special courses that I taught each term, my student attendance was often just one student, so I'm very familiar with one-on-one lessons.
Currently, I am a substitute teacher and have taught from pre-K to seniors in high school in several subjects. So, although my formal teaching experience has been in ESL, it is not the only subject that I'm very comfortable with. It is also to be noted, that I graduated with a B.A. in Anthropology and Language Studies, so I'm very comfortable with anthropology and archaeology after having taken upper level courses and preparing for graduate study (which I will begin this fall). Cultural anthropology is my most comfortable area, but I have training in biological and linguistic anthropology as well.
Overall, I'm very willing to tutor in any elementary subjects and having substitute teaching experience with elementary math, reading, writing, and spelling has prepared me well for that. At the middle school and high school levels, I would be the most comfortable with English and social studies, and at the high school and university levels, I can offer services in anthropology, ESL, and psychology. I can also offer services proofreading or outlining papers and with general studying habits.
Because of my experience teaching several subjects, my experience with children, my TESL certification, and my degree, I know that I can be a great tutor! I love learning, and feel that education is an incredible opportunity. I hope that I can help make yours or your child's as fun and enlightening as mine has been and will continue to be. Thanks so much for your interest, and please let me know if you think I'd be a good fit for you or for your child :). In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology. I studied biological, medical, cultural, and linguistic anthropology as well as archaeology several courses of which were high level. Also, I have been accepted into the applied anthropology program at NMSU with a fellowship and assistantship because of my high GPA from my undergraduate program and my qualification in the field of anthropology.
My archeology experience includes training on dating methods, excavation techniques, prehistoric Native American culture, and some zooarchaeology. A few courses that I took during my undergraduate training include Introduction to Prehistory, Indians of North America, Archaeological Methods, and Midwestern Archaeology.
Because I was an ESL teacher in Korea for a year, I helped instruct students on correct letter construction and word spacing. Since then, as a substitute teacher, I have worked with children learning cursive writing while completing writing assignments from their teachers.
During my year teaching in Korea, I taught five different classes of students with three different volumes of a phonics text book. I have also worked as an aid to teachers using phonics programs such as Jolly Phonics while I've been substitute teaching recently.
