About Jes

I'm a former trial attorney and award-winning TV news reporter who has moved into teaching. In preparing for that I have taken two of the standardized national exams to test teachers on content mastery of the subject matter. Those exams are on English Language, Literature, Composition, and on World and U.S. History.

My undergraduate degree was a double major in Journalism and Economics, and when I was still in college I was tutoring other college students in Economics, and then in law school tutored other law students.

Economics and history can be interesting... and anyone can learn to write, with the right guidance.

I'd love to help.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bar Exam

I took and passed the bar exam in Tennessee and then practiced law for 19 years.

Criminal Justice

I was a trial attorney for 19 years, with roughly half of that in criminal defense.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a substitute teacher for elementary schools classes, and for the last 6 months have also been tutoring elementary school students through an educational company. I have the experience to assist your student and look forward to doing so.

Phonics

During the past school year I taught Study Skills in a middle grades public school in Kirtland, NM, as a licensed special ed teacher. As the class was set up Study Skills was essentially a remedial reading course, which included a fair amount of instruction in phonics.

Public Speaking

I worked as a trial attorney for 19 years trying cases to judges and juries, and for ten years before that I was in TV news, most of the time as an on-air reporter.

Social Studies

19 years as a trial attorney, 10 years covering local government in TV news, work as a legislative lobbyist, and work on two Congressional campaigns, give me real life insight into what Social Studies covers, and an economics degree with an anthropology minor cover the academic side of it. I've also passed the PRAXIS exam for World and U.S. History Content Knowledge, demonstrating competence in the content. This is an area where being able to recite facts, figures, formulas and dates is not what is important - having an understanding of how and why things happened and their inter-relationships is what is important. My background helps me explain it in a manner which can interest anyone willing to make even a modest effort.

Special Needs

I have worked with autistic students as a special needs teacher in Georgia schools. I have also taken and passed the testing required in Illinois for special education teachers, specifically the following exams: Illinois Certification Testing System exam 155 Learning Behavior Specialist 1; exam 163 Special Education Curriculum; and 300 Basic Skills. I also have served as a student/parent advocate at IEP meetings (Individual Education Plan meetings).

Study Skills

For the last year I have been working as a middle grades special education teacher in Kirtland, NM, certified by the State of New Mexico, specifically teaching study skills classes, which at our school essentially amounts to teaching remedial reading to middle school students, with considerable emphasis on phonics, comprehension and determining word meaning from context. For the two prior years I was teaching GED classes full-time at the Bradshaw State Jail, a men's prison in Henderson, TX, with my focus being reading and math at the middle grades levels.
