About Nancy

Hello Students,

I am a PhD in Education with a concentration in Curriculum & Instruction and a focus in Literacy, Language, and Culture. I have taught many classes in literacy and language arts to both native and non-native English speakers. One of my particular strengths is in teaching academic/scholarly writing: composition, essays, research papers and thesis writing. Additionally, I am versed in teaching creative writing. My dissertation concerns the teaching of writing to preservice public school teachers.

I have also published in various scholarly texts, primarily in the subject areas of language teaching and learning and literacy, especially writing. I have presented papers on these topics internationally and nationally.

I have more than twenty years of experience in teaching all age levels from Pre-K to graduate students. Most recently, I taught Writing and Grammar and Listening and Speaking to international students, primarily undergraduate and graduate students studying to be teachers themselves. I also taught undergraduate and graduate preservice teachers in Language Arts methods and in Field Experience in Education. I have taught English language learners from third to sixth grade in all core subject areas as well as special needs children. Additionally I have taught English language learners in secondary education, particularly in the area of English writing and American literature.

I look forward to working with you to become expert writers and readers and critical thinkers in the English language. I am also available to teach native speakers of Spanish who desire to improve their English language skills.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
