Hello there! My name is Jessica and I am an experienced teacher, tutor, professional writer and public speaker. I was the first ever female City of Albuquerque Poet Laureate and I now teach evenings at UNM for the Chican@ Studies Department. I teach Writers in the Community and Borderlands Poetics. Though I love poetry and have published three collections, I also excel in writing in many other genres (essay/expository/research papers/technical writing/memoir/creative writing and more). I taught Humanities and Indigenous History Culture and Thought at the middle school campus of Native American Community Academy (2 years) and Language Arts at Robert F. Kennedy High School (3 years). I was a tutor for CNM and UNM.
I absolutely love teaching and tutoring. My teaching and tutoring philosophy is to have fun while learning, accessing the academics by providing the student with a safe space to cultivate independent thinking, to promote analytical and critical thinking using the text, materials and discussion, as well promote sustainable studying habits. I have much experience working with ALL AGES (K-12 and Adult Learners). In the summer I facilitate a writing program at the National Hispanic Cultural Center and I am also a NM Humanities Scholar. I am working on my fourth book and am currently in the research phase. I have ample time and a flexible schedule to tutor individuals (or small groups) on Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri and also Sat and Sun. I am available both during the day and early evenings. I hope you will consider me!
I have written three books of literature (West End Press and Swimming With Elephants Publications). My first book received the Zia Book Award by the NM Women Press and the Tucson PIMA Library System Book Award.
I was the first female City of Albuquerque Poet Laureate (2014 -2016) and worked closely with the ABQ Museum of Art and History to create original literary work centering around exhibits and community.
I was an ABQ TEDXTALK Speaker three separate times. I have also been on six City of ABQ Slam Teams and have competed at national events since 2006.
I have edited 4 creative writing anthologies (Kids With Causes I, Kids With Causes II, Voces Summer Writing Youth Institute 2014, Voces Summer Writing Youth Institute 2016).
I LOVE writing and reading! This translates in absolutely loving to teach students of all ages in this area. I like to have fun through learning but also assist students in "getting it." I am a slam poet, an experienced middle school/high school teacher and college instructor, professional writer and public speaker, and I really really love chihuahuas. I have three!
I hope you will consider me to be your tutor! Hello there! My name is Jessica and I am an experienced teacher, tutor, professional writer and public speaker. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was the City of Albuquerque Poet Laureate for the last two years. An experienced writer, I taught Humanities: Indigenous Culture, History and Thought at the Native American Community Academy. I also taught Language Arts at Robert F. Kennedy High school and currently teach to writing/literature classes at the University of New Mexico. During the summer I am the Lead Facilitator/Teacher for Voces/Voices Summer Writing Institute for Youth. I have published three collections of poetry and edited several award-winning literary anthologies.
I was a reading and writing teacher for Native American Community Academy for two years. I have also taught writing at Robert F. Kennedy Charter High School and was a writing tutor at Central New Mexico Community College and the University of New Mexico College. I am currently an Adjunct Instructor for UNM and teach two evening classes, "Writers in the Community" and "Borderland Poetics." I have edited several award-winning literary anthologies, have interned at UNM Blue Mesa Literary Magazine and I was a tutor for both CNM and UNM, in which I assisted students in copy editing/proof reading essays, articles, and other assignments.
I am a three-time TEDXABQ Speaker. Also, I have taught Public Speaking for Upward Bound at New Mexico Tech and I am a Slam Poet (six-time member of the ABQ Slam Team, two-time Women of the World Poetry Slam ABQ Champ). I teach a writing class for UNM in which students are also guided in publicly presenting their original works.
I have ten years experience teaching, speaking/presenting to groups. Often I travel to perform and present at college campuses and various schools.
