About Michael

I have nearly ten years of instruction experience from my time in the Air Force. Most of my instruction involved training post-graduate flight training. In my off-hours, however, I served as a Cub Scout Den Leader and Assistant Cub Master, so I can relate to children of all ages. In fact, my ultimate goal is to acquire my teaching certificate and teach either primary or secondary education.

Tutoring is in my blood. I have taught classes in front of entire classrooms as well as one-on-one. The greatest thrill is when I discover the teaching method that best suits the student...it is as if a light turns on in the student's mind and is reflected in their eyes.

My two decades as an Air Force navigator required the daily use of mathematics, both on the ground and in flight. I am completely conversant in all math subjects from basic addition and subtraction through calculus.

I am currently seeking permanent post-retirement employment, so I am available to meet any day at any time or place. Give me a call!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I have played chess since I was 14. For the entirety of high school, I played multiple games a day and achieved a rating of 2100.

I entered an academy-wide competition at the US Air Force Academy (4000 students) and placed second.

I continue to be an avid player and have since taught three nephews and my two sons to play the game.

Political Science

I majored in Legal Studies at the US Air Force Academy. Since it was not a fully accredited pre-law program, the requisite syllabi was based in large measure on political science classes.

After more than 22 years in the Air Force, including time at the Pentagon, I have experienced up close the machinations of our political system and how it interfaces with the states/individuals as well as the systems of our allies, competitors and, at times, our enemies.

I received a masters degree in Strategic Studies from the Army's Command and General Staff College. The program involved travel to multiple countries (UK, Germany, Belgium, Turkey, Israel, Vietnam, among others) to speak with senior civilian leaders and understand how they sought to implement their agendas.

Public Speaking

I participated in debate for all 4 years of high school. Although I spent most of my time in classical debate, I briefly used the Lincoln-Douglas format.

I spent 22 years in the Air Force speaking and briefing civilian and military members in multiple fora. Tours of duty included stints at the Pentagon and as a squadron commander in charge of 200 people. While in the Pentagon, I regularly presented information to small and large groups of senior military leadership. As a commander, I held weekly "commander calls" where I discussed pertinent issues in-person with my entire squadron on a weekly basis.

As far as teaching methodology goes, I would present students with a variety of audience approaches (e.g. with large groups, look immediately above everyone's head versus directly in the eye), speech preparation techniques (e.g. how to bulletize talking points, spacing between bullets) and posture/pacing (e.g. it's OK to pause if you lose you thought process, how to move about the stage). Combined, those three areas should help bring the student some degree of comfort in learning how to speak in public. Practice will do the rest.

Soccer

I played soccer for 14 years in competitive leagues prior to college. I played goalie (keeper) for 15 of those seasons and fullback/halfback.

I have also taught competitive soccer as a head coach and assistant coach in the 8 to 12 year age brackets. As part of that coaching experience, I have developed training tools and schematics to initiate those who are new to the sport.
