About Beverly

For the past 26 years, I have been a homeschool teacher and tutor with a passion to integrate math, music and language arts games into everyday learning. I firmly believe that children (and people) learn best through interactive play. My 21 year old son describes his home education as mostly "just playing games". He is currently at the Juilliard School studying cello performance. My eldest has his Master's Degree in computer science and is working at Northrup Grumman in Maryland, and my daughter uses her Master's Degree working as a technical writer in Boston. My 18 year old son is on the Autistic Spectrum and is with me in Albuquerque taking dual credit classes at CNM. I homeschooled all of my children until college.

I have developed a learning games curriculum, which includes both gross and fine motor activities, and have used this curriculum successfully with many children, individually and in small groups. I even used this same curriculum to tutor students in grades 9-12 in the Boston Public School System which proves both the versatility of the curriculum as well as the need to play games to enrich students so they don't end up desperately needing it later (although games are fun and useful at all ages).

My passion is getting children/people to understand the concepts, not just "fill in the blanks". I love enabling children/people to recognize the inherent algorithms in even the most basic math and reading. I evaluate the student's overall learning style and the learning style of the moment and freely adapt my teaching method to match. Since I have taught children/people who don't easily fit into the "normal" student description (such as children with ADD/ADHD and those on the autistic spectrum), I have experience individualizing curriculum to maximize learning. I also find it extremely helpful to integrate music into my teaching both as an end unto itself and as a tool to enhance learning.

I have tutored people of all ages including teaching adults to use a computer and would be happy to see if we are a good fit!

I am generally available 9am to 5pm everyday in person and online. I charge $40 per hour.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

Having read the Bible through, cover-to-cover, a dozen times, having memorized many verses, and having taught it to many groups (adults and children alike), I have more than a passing knowledge of the Bible. I have read many commentaries, done worldview studies, and have led many people through the doctrines of Christianity. Additionally, I have done extensive studies on as many of the other world religions as I can (and continue to do so as I find more) so that I have a good idea what ideas exist which oppose or are similar to those in the Bible.

Ear Training

I took a class on ear training in college and observed three other year-long classes on ear training since. I also have taught several classes on ear training. I have sung in choirs since I was a child, took private voice lessons, and am currently singing in a high level choir which performs with the local symphony.

Homeschool

I homeschooled my four children from 1993 to the present through high school. Though I used the literature unit study approach to my teaching, I am familiar with many other curricula. I have taught in many homeschool cooperatives: music, history, science with labs, Spanish, to name a few. After a recent move, I volunteer-taught at a local homeschool cooperative. My two eldest children have their Master's Degrees and are happily working, my third just finished his junior year studying cello at Juilliard, and my fourth is taking dual credit classes at a local community college.

Sight Singing

I took a class on sight singing in college and observed one other year-long class on sight singing since. I also have taught several classes on sight singing using both solfeggio and, for younger children, a curriculum which I developed. I have sung in choirs since I was a child, took private voice lessons, and am currently singing in a high level choir which performs with the local symphony.

Violin

I took private violin lessons for ten years, minored in music in high school and college, and was in the Youth Symphony of New York (which performed at Carnegie Hall) in high school and the MIT Symphony Orchestra in college. Since then, I have overseen the teaching of stringed instruments to my four children (one of whom plays electric violin in the band, Isenmor, and another of which is currently majoring in cello at Juilliard), and played with them and their classes throughout their years of education. Recently, I was asked to teach strings at a local school after the teachers received reports from the students whom I substitute taught.
