About Dennis

I am a grandfather with four children and five grandchildren. Nothing in this world is as precious as seeing that "Ah-ha!" expression on the face of the children when they realize they have just learned something new and grand. We learn something new with every experience we have.

All human learning should be experienced as something precious even if it seems to be difficult or painful at the time. Besides my family, I have had the good fortune to have taught students at the university level for several years.

And as an executive manager of businesses, I strove to approach my leadership responsibilities as "teaching experiences" whenever possible. I have five college degrees, including two doctorates, spanning diverse areas of learning.

My undergraduate degree is a Bachelor of Science degree from UNM with a major in mathematics and a minor in psychology. Later, I earned an MBA degree from UCLA in executive management with a concentration in Information Management. That business education sparked a desire to study law as I realized that the ability to manage business organizations is bounded by one's grasp of the law which, after all, exists to manage business affairs within society. After a successful legal career in management, I felt I wanted to explore a new area of interest.

I went back to school and earned an MS degree in Counseling with dual concentrations in Marriage and Family Therapy as well as Rehabilitation Counseling. Studying psychology at the same time my grandchildren arrived led me to wonder about their development in this world. That wonder culminated in my working on a Ph.D. Degree, once again from UNM. My dissertation and field of study was about gender identity development and how is it that a person develops a gendered sense of identity.

From my bio, it is not difficult to see that I am able to teach many different subjects on many different levels. We could even explore Quantum Physics together, if you would like. As I mentioned, my philosophy us that learning should be a positive experience. Some learning, as in early education, I believe benefits from formal structure and challenges that come with given assignments. Other learning, such as the exploration of Quantum Physics, I believe is really better served by utilizing a more free-form mode of inquiry. Any worthwhile endeavor, however, benefits from planning and being goal oriented. Periodic assessments and progress reports are an important part of achieving goals.
