University of New Mexico (Elementary Education)
I am a certified Elementary school teacher. I have taught Kindergarten and First grade. This is my 5th year teaching in New Mexico. I graduated from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, with endorsements in Language Arts and TESOL. I am passionate about teaching. It is my goal to keep my students challenged and learning in a safe and fun environment. I strive to create and encourage a love of learning that will last your child a lifetime.
I will perform Baseline assessments to determine your child's present levels. From there I will create individualized instruction that will improve your child's reading and comprehension skills. I will determine if your child has mastered skills in phonemic awareness and phonics which are crucial to reading.
For the last three years I have taught Common Core State Standards in my classroom. I understand the alignment between grade levels and how skills are scaffolded from Kindergarten to 6th grade. I have served on instructional teams for my district to choose appropriately aligned curriculum based on the Common Core State Standards.
I have been a certified Elementary school teacher going on 5 yrs. I enjoy teaching and have a passion for teaching reading.
I have taught my students phonics skills based on the Comprehensive Intervention Model from The University of Arkansas in Little Rock. The Comprehensive Intervention Model (CIM) is a systemic and layered design for increasing the literacy achievement of struggling readers in kindergarten to eighth grades. The CIM is based on the belief that teachers must be experts in observing the changes that occur over time in children’s literacy behaviors and be able to make moment-to-moment decisions based on their children’s strengths and areas of need. The CIM uses a layered approach within a four-tier framework for aligning classroom instruction, supplemental interventions, and special education.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
