About Ariel

My name is Ariel, and I'm currently an English teacher at the high school level. This coming year I will be teaching English 10 and English 11 as well as creative writing. This will be my second year teaching formally, but I have worked with kids of all ages for several years, and there is no profession I would rather have! Teaching is my passion, and I'm so blessed to have such a rewarding career.

I earned my Secondary Education degree with a specialization in language arts from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. However, I prepared for my teaching career long before I graduated from college. I worked with Golden Apple in 2009 and 2010 during the summers to aid my understanding of teaching, and I worked with excellent mentors who had centered their lives around teaching. From 2010 to 2012 I worked in a recreational setting with kids after school and during the summers, which included tutoring kids from ages 5 to 14. However, working with middle and high school students in reading and writing is my passion and the area in which I have more experience. I completed my student teaching with mostly 7th and 8th grade students, and last year I taught 8th grade language arts, English 10, and English 11 in a private, college preparatory school in Albuquerque. I tutored several students during lunch and after school throughout the year, and I enjoy helping students grow and gain confidence in English.

I love teaching, and I'm exciting to expand my passion during the week with more tutoring!

When I tutor one-on-one with students, I'm happy to answer any questions they have, and if one method doesn't work, we will keep trying to find methods that work best with each student. One of my best teaching traits is that I can figure out the individual needs of each student and adjust my teaching accordingly. Everyone learns differently, and those differences should be recognized and developed so each student can succeed and become the best student they can be.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Literature

My degree is in Secondary Education with a specialization in language arts. I was required to take multiple literature classes, writing classes, and a grammar class as well as classes about pedagogy and the teaching of reading and writing in particular. I have taken literature courses about Shakespearean literature, Victorian literature, later American literature, Romantic American literature, African American literature, and North African literature.
