In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have studied Modern Standard Arabic and Classical Arabic in my master's degree program at the University of Chicago. I took three years of Arabic language courses, which covered the entirety of Arabic grammar in addition to most common vocabulary. In addition, I have taken courses on the Qur'an, Tafsir, Readings in Islamic Law, and Early Apocalyptic Texts all of which required advanced reading of primary sources in Arabic. My master's thesis included a translation of 20 pages of Arabic from a previously untranslated text from the late 11th century on Islamic Jurisprudence.
At the University of California, Berkeley I minored in Persian (Farsi). In addition to three years worth of Persian language courses, I took two advanced Persian literature courses, which were conducted in Persian. I also took several courses on the History of Persian literature in English. I completed the Advanced Persian Language Program at the University of Texas - Austin. Finally, I took several advanced reading courses in Persian during my master's degree program at the University of Chicago.
