About Kent

I am passionate about reading and writing. And I know how to transmit that passion to my students--whether online or in person. That's why I have a proven track record of helping students develop the motivation to do the hard work required to write well. Whether you're a 4th grader or a high school senior, essays, school projects, and reports can be challenging--especially when you lack confidence or are missing important skills. That's where I come in. I listen deeply; I assess; I strategize with each unique student so that his/her specific reading and writing goals are met. Everyone has strengths. I build on those. Everyone has areas of weakness. I co-create lessons for skill-building. And I expect students to work as hard as I do.

I have tutored students in grades 4-12 in reading comprehension, writing, and Biology/Life Science. I have helped adults read for meaning and write with conviction. I have assisted students of all ages to uncover their inborn writing ability. I have worked successfully with students with a variety of learning differences--including autism, dyslexia, ADD, ADHD, and visual/audio processing challenges.

My background: I graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. from my undergraduate liberal arts college and have 9 years experience as a public school teacher. I received a Masters in Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Fairfield University and am a novelist, essayist and scholar. I love my work.

May you take joy in your reading and writing; I hope you choose to share with me the very human journey of communicating through the written word.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have successfully tutored many students in standardized test-taking--including online sessions. I have a Master's degree in Writing and am an expert at helping students understand those tricky comparison, context, and literary analysis questions which are typical in the ACT English!

Biology

My Bachelor of Arts was in Biology (summa cum laude) and I was premed with a Chemistry minor. I taught Biology and Life Science for nine years as a public school teacher.

English

I am a novelist and essayist and have a Masters in Creative Writing. I enjoy tutoring in narrative, essay, and creative writing as well as literary analysis. Tutoring gives me a chance to share my love for the English language and for the craft of writing!

Literature

As part of my Master's degree, I studied many classics in depth. Teaching great literature and helping students to "translate" it is one of my passions. Whether it's "To Kill a Mockingbird" or "Lord of the Flies," I motivate through my enthusiasm, then adapt the teaching to suit each student's needs and capacity.

Proofreading

My Master's degree in Creative Writing required me to spend many hours proofreading the work of my peers. I was expected to submit professional essays and to critique the work of other students. I have adapted that rigorous training to my tutoring so that students understand how to use a series of drafts to improve their essays and other writing.

Reading

I am a full time tutor with experience tutoring reading comprehension in grades 4-12. I also have a Masters in Creative Writing. As a former public school teacher with nine years experience, I enjoy tailoring my reading comprehension approach to each student. I motivate students to enjoy the adventures of reading comprehension and literary analysis!

SAT Reading

I currently tutor in SAT reading and writing and have been successfully tutoring students in the history portion of the test. I received my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing in 2014 and am a high school teacher with 9 years of experience. My specialty is reading comprehension and writing. As a novelist and essayist, my passions are reading and writing!

Vocabulary

Building a robust vocabulary is a must for any student at any grade level. I encourage students to read, read, read! Then they naturally absorb new words. They also learn to look up the definitions and to use context to guess meaning. By the time SAT tests come around, they are ready!

Writing

I am a novelist and essayist and have a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. I graduated summa cum laude from my undergraduate college and scored at the 99th percentile in the verbal section of the GRE. Additionally, I have 9 years' experience as a public school teacher and am currently tutoring students of all ages in reading comprehension and writing.

Great tutor.

Kent is very helpful in engaging with my son who used to have anxiety on writing. Now he is a happy writer who especially loves creative writing. Kent has many good suggestions and always keeps up with his schedule. I highly recommend him.
