About Genie

As a NM Licensed Level 2 teacher in Art and Reading, I have worked with students ranging from 2nd grade reading level to college level. I have tutored and taught phonics, reading fluency, spelling, and language usage. Understanding a student level is most important in tutoring. I begin by getting information regarding school work levels from parents and then proceed beginning anywhere from basic phonemes. Writing skills tutoring ranges from brainstorming topics to editing for publication.

I have also tutored math under the government SES program. One 5th grader who was considered a special ed student ended up actually assisting the teacher in teaching long division to the class and at the end of the year was removed from the special ed class. My math tutoring ranges from elementary through Algebra I.

In the area of art, I used a modified Teaching for Artistic Behavior that allowed students to engage in authentic learning, in other words, not duplicating a given sample of work. This way they tap into their creativity using higher thinking skills. Critiques and discussion of methods employed, analysis of redo potential and understanding that what one might consider a mistake may actually be an enhancement are employed. In addition to being a licensed teacher, I am also an artist working with many mediums: oil, acrylic and watercolor paints, textiles (papermaking, weaving, sewing, needlework), jewelry making (silversmithing, PMC).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

Learn the basics of how to draw from a NM Licensed Art Teacher who has taught here for the past 6 years. You will be using several techniques from the elements of art -- contour drawing, blind contour drawing, and using a grid are among them. Contour drawing will teach the hand to follow what the eye sees. Grid drawing will help enlarge objects the student wants to draw or break parts of the image down into an understandable object. Various shading techniques will be learned to assist students in seeing and creating values. Composition (object arrangements) will be also studied so student is able to understand the principles of design. Student will most often be using #2 pencil to begin, then graduate to the various H and B type pencils, conte crayons, and charcoal.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a NM licensed reading teacher and tutor of reading, writing, and math for the past 5 years, I have worked with students from 2nd grade through high school freshmen teaching/tutoring these subjects. I have worked with students who have learning disabilities, including ADHA, special education, Aspergers, and bi-polar. One student was taken out of her special ed math class after being tutored by me for several months

Grammar

Licensed Reading Teacher who has taught reading/writing to 2nd grade through community college levels.

Phonics

Learning the basic sounds and sound combinations necessary to learning how to read and write from a NM Licensed reading teacher who has taught and tutored reading and writing for the past 5 years. The student begins with flashcards of the basic sounds, then learns some of the rules for those sounds, for instance, the 'silent e' rule, the 'two vowels together' sounds. The student then does repetitive exercises to give him/her a solid background from which to proceed to be able to decode and spell larger words.

Reading

Taught both the Read Naturally and Read 180 programs to secondary students, and also tutored 2nd through 5th grade students in writing and reading. I assisted community college level students in all phases of writing from brainstorming through editing for publication. I have past experience writing for a PR firm in Chicago and also as a newspaper writer.

My grandaughter seem to really be at ease with her.

It is really hard to answer this at this point as we have had only one tutoring session. We will answer more after next weeks lesson.
