About Melissa

I have been a teacher for 23 years. My experience is in both a Christian and Charter School environment. I have experience teaching from first grade through eighth grade. My experience includes working in multi-grade classrooms of two grades and four grades. I have received the "Excellence in Teaching" Award (2009) from the Alumni Association Foundation for teaching innovation, an award given to a dozen teachers nationwide.

I know that my innovative way of teaching comes from the fact that I also love to learn. I believe that children will only enjoy their education of they have developed a love for learning.

As a junior high teacher for the past 17 years, I have prepared my students at the level in which they are able to qualify for honors and advance classes in high school.

I am a motivator as well as an educator and I consistently look for ways to help my students develop as learners.

I have a child with learning 'differences' (notice I didn't say disabilities)and have become aware of the way children learn. I am open to working with all types of learners and levels.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have had experience teaching bible-based classes in a Christian school. I have also taken undergraduate classes in Old and New Testament studies. I have taught in a Christian school for 21 years from a Bible-based curriculum.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught grades 1st through 6th grade in all subject areas. I have also homeschooled my three children in grades 4, 5 and 8.
