About Walt

Regardless of whether you're a standout looking to strengthen your knowledge and skills with extra preparation, a fighter pushing to make it through, or someone in between, I can relate to your academic journey. I'm here to help you take that subject you're studying and make it meaningful, so that you find some usable answers to the question, "How does this connect to 'real' life?" And memorable, so that you'll build not only immediate, but also long-term connections of the knowledge.

As a teacher and tutor, I bring nearly 15 years teaching experience in classrooms and personal tutoring nationally (in New Mexico and California) and internationally (in Argentina and PerĂº in South America, where I lived for almost 5 years). Although I learned to be a student (and have spent a lot of time as one), I've also worked all kinds of jobs, from landscaping and cabinet manufacturing to professional youth work. At the core, I've invested most of my adult life in young people, helping them develop the skills and tools to have a life worth imitating.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

At age 35, I was clinically diagnosed with ADD. Since then, I have done a significant amount of personal research into dealing with ADD/ADHD, including creating effective modifications for students in my classrooms. Influential in my process has been the work of Hallowell and Ratey in Driven To Distraction and Dr. Daniel Amen with his framework of 6 types of ADD/ADHD.

American History

Currently holding a NM teaching certificate in Social Studies, I have taught this course in both California and New Mexico. As well, I simply enjoy history and teach from that approach!

Bible Studies

Prior to the subject matter waiver in Social Science I earned at San Jose State University, I obtained my bachelor's degree in Christian Education from Biola University in La Mirada, CA (1985). Following that, I earned my M.A. from Western Conservative Baptist Seminary (Portland, OR) in 1995. For the majority of my adult life, I have been involved in teaching the Bible to groups ranging from one person to upwards of 1,500 people.

ESL/ESOL

In obtaining my teaching certification in California, all courses included an emphasis on teaching English language learners (ELLs). Furthermore, while living in PerĂº, I taught private lessons to individuals in the community where I lived, including one of the lead Air Traffic Controllers for Lima's international airport. Therefore, I am trained and experienced in aiding ELLs in learning English.

European History

I am a licensed history / social studies teacher in New Mexico. I have several years experience in teaching this subject. European History is one of my personal favorite subjects because of the cultural and intellectual connections between Europe and the USA. I work hard to create learning that is meaningful and memorable. My methods revolve around helping others learn to more effectively.

Geography

While I am not a professional geographer, my experience in life and teaching helps me understand the impact of geography on all of us. Having lived and traveled in several countries, I see the relational value of understanding geography. Therefore, when I teach geography and geographical elements, I do so with a life-connection approach.

Government & Politics

I am a licensed history / social studies teacher in New Mexico. I have several years experience in teaching this subject. While Government and Politics seems distant and disconnected to many people, I see the relevance to daily life. I work hard to create learning that is meaningful and memorable. My methods revolve around helping others learn to more effective, efficient, and precise ways to communicate.

Macintosh

I have been a Macintosh user since the early years of the machine, having been an owner of a Mac SE (beginning 1987) and continuing to own and use Macs to this day. While I don't have any official certification, twenty five years of hands-on use have given me a high degree of familiarity with the MacOS and multiple programs for Mac. In the process of using the Mac, I know what I *don't* know and do not try to over extend myself and thus create problems in working with Mac computers.

Proofreading

I am a licensed teacher in New Mexico, including in bilingual education (English and Spanish). I seek to see people become more skilled in communicating their ideas, and learning how to proofread is an essential part of this. My methods revolve around helping others learn to more effective, efficient, and precise ways to communicate.

Public Speaking

Both my undergraduate and graduate studies revolved around strengthening public speaking skills. I have been involved in public speaking since the early 1980's. Groups I have spoken for range from children to adults and from 15 to upwards of 1,200 people.

Reading

Having worked as an educator as far back as 1998 and through the present, I am committed to seeing students develop their ability to read proficiently. As a licensed bilingual teacher, it is a significant part of the work I do. I will help the learner understand how to read with purpose and passion.

Religion

I obtained my bachelor's degree in Christian Education from Biola University in La Mirada, CA (1985). Following that, I earned my M.A. from Western Conservative Baptist Seminary (Portland, OR) in 1995. While I hold certain religious convictions, training and dialogue has taught me first to understand and communicate any other religion's perspective(s) as an adherent would before making a critique of it.

Social Studies

I am a certified social studies teacher in the state of New Mexico, holding a teaching license. This should be verifiable through the Public Education Department of New Mexico in Santa Fe, NM.

Spanish

I am a licensed bilingual teacher and an experienced Spanish teacher with nearly five years residency in South America.

World History

I am a licensed history / social studies teacher in New Mexico. I have 5 years experience in teaching this subject. World History is one of my personal favorite subjects because of the breadth of the discipline. I work hard to create learning that is meaningful and memorable.

Writing

I have nearly twenty years as a licensed teacher, including bilingual education. I maintain a strong focus on clear and powerful communication and assisting others in achieving the skills to do the same. * At the core is my passion for the success of those with whom I work.
