About L

This is my tutoring credo: I deeply enjoy challenging others to find learning as gratifying as I do. I believe in encouragement, affirmation, earned praise and -- whenever possible -- injecting a healthy dose of humor. I always listen to my students to learn from them what their needs are and craft my tutoring style around their learning style.

I specialize in working with high school and college students. History and English are my favorite core subjects. While an undergraduate at the University of Washington I tutored with Student Athlete Services, working with a variety of athletes in many subjects. I created extracurricular tests and quizzes that were then incorporated into what the Services offered.

I have degrees in Music and Theater and have finished half my MFA in Costume Design. I worked in the classroom in a variety of positions in Seattle Schools. I taught high school subjects in Los Angeles for 10 years. I have been a professional tutor for 5 years.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have taken and passed at over 90% both SAT & ACT English portions within the last 5 years.

ACT Reading

Took the ACT in high school with excellent scores. Retook it 3 years ago to qualify as a Princeton Review tutor. Have more than ten years' experience as a high school teacher, including years of administering and proctoring tests. As a tutor I have helped all my students to better their test-prep and -taking skills which resulted in higher grades.

American History

My very favorite teaching subject - to date - is History. I have taught World, European, and US History, including AP students. What I have learned personally from teaching the material over and over I enjoy passing on to my students. I have had great success turning students' grades around and my students come to love the process of learning.

English

Essay writing, note-taking, organization, spelling, vocabulary, editing.

European History

My very favorite teaching subject - to date - is History. I have taught World, European, and US History, including AP students. What I have learned personally from teaching the material over and over I enjoy passing on to my students. Proofreading

I have edited everything from grants, to children's books, essays, and plays.

SAT Reading

I specialize in high school English including Vocabulary, Essay Writing, Reading Comprehension, and Test Prep.

Sewing

I began sewing when I was 5 years old. I sewed many clothes for myself and others from junior high through college and beyond. I took on my first costuming project with Bathhouse Theater (Seattle), and progressed to shows with Spectrum Dance Theater (Seattle), and the University of Washington undergraduate and graduate dance programs. I graduated from the University of Washington with a BA in Theater, emphasis in Costume Design. In 1995 I moved to Los Angeles to participate in the MFA Costume Design program on full scholarship at California Institute of the Arts. I have since worked in building and designing costumes for Universal Studios Hollywood theme park, independent films, and an award-winning stage musical.

I specialize in working with beginning to intermediate sewers. Sewing has taught me patience, perseverance, and creative problem-solving. Sewing clothes or other projects for yourself or others, knowing you have handmade something that is unique and 'tailor-made' -- for far less than handing it over to a professional -- can be really satisfying.

Study Skills

I have 8 years of college, where I developed excellent note-taking and study skills that ultimately helped me graduate on the Honor Roll at the University of Washington. I take what I learned through practical application and share that with high school and college tutoring students who need help organizing their thoughts and knowing how to take notes that will help them be successful essay writers and test takers. I can share with you what I learned that made it possible not to dread essays, papers, and tests. Yes, it IS possible!

World History

My very favorite teaching subject - to date - is History. I have taught World, European, and US History, including AP students. What I have learned personally from teaching the material over and over I enjoy passing on to my students. I have had great success turning students' grades around and my students come to love the process of learning.

Writing

I have personal experience as a short story and children's book writer and playwright. I have also worked as an editor for other people's writings.
