I am excited about the opportunity to tutor your little one! I have been a head start teacher for 5 years and recently obtained a Masters degree in Early Childhood education. I have also worked for a pilot online tutoring service for the state of Colorado. My passion is in guiding young children in the love of learning. My goal for all of my students is that they look at learning as an adventure not a struggle or a chore. This is why I would love the opportunity to tutor your child and help them learn to get as much out of the learning process as possible. I focus on individualization and building on each individual students learning style. If you want to see your child succeed and discover a love for learning, contact me and I would love to set up a time to talk about your child's needs. Hello!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I did my student teaching a public school kindergarten classroom. My responsibilities included reading groups, math instruction, as well as developing a social studies unit and center activities. I have 1 year of experience tutoring students in grades k-6th in the areas of reading comprehension, math and study skills. I also have 1 year of experience as a special education paraprofessional teaching disadvantaged students of all grade levels in all subject areas. I taught students how to look for important information in textbooks as well as how to connect this information with their own experiences. I taught students strategies for learning multiplication tables such as skip counting, and introduced them to computer games as well as hands-on games to help memorization become fun instead of boring. I taught students how to take notes when reading through passages and how to ask themselves questions about the story as they read as well as how to make connections between the characters and events in the story and their own lives. I have a Master's in Early Childhood Education grades birth-3rd grade but have also tutored children in 4th-6th grade. I also have experience working with elementary ELL students in the areas of vocabulary and reading comprehension.
I have 5 years of experience working with ELL students and their parents in a pre-k setting. Each year my class has been between 60 and 80% monolingual Spanish speaking. I have training in Dual language development along with a Master's in Early Childhood education which included a class on working with ELL, ESL students. I include many visuals in my lessons and focus on vocabulary development while still supporting the home language.
I have 5 years of experience teaching pre-k for Head Start. Many of the lessons I have taught involve phonics and teaching students how to make letter/sound connections. I teach students movements to help them remember letter sounds; we also use music and visuals. I have created many activities such as CVC word cards where students will use magnet letters to create words such as cat, hat, hot, sun, etc... . Along with activities which allowed students to match objects to their correct beginning or ending sound In kindergarten I worked with students on blends and digraphs such as st, bl and ai, ar. I created centers in which students would use puzzle pieces with word beginnings and ends and match them together to make words. We would also have discussions which involved students thinking of words with a certain digraphs such as ch or th. I also created an alphabet soup activity where students would hunt for letters in a sensory table of beans and rice and match the letters or blends to the pictures that have the same beginning or ending sound as the letter or blend they discover. I also have an MA in Early Childhood education.
Study skills involves teaching students effective strategies to learn and retain new information. I have 1 year of experience tutoring students in grades k-6 study skills. I was also a special education paraprofessional for 1 year helping disadvantaged students learn study skills. Methods that I have used to teach study skills include guiding students on how to look for important information in their textbooks as well as how to connect new information to familiar situations. For example if a student is studying a science textbook I encourage them to look for bold words, headings, and to examine the study questions in the back of the book to get an idea of what they should be paying attention to when they are reading the material. I suggest that they write down questions that they may have about the vocabulary or subject matter as they are reading. After they are finished reading I suggest a time of reflection during which they would think of experiences or situations they have been through that would help them relate to the new material. I also suggest that they either go over their questions with their parents or speak to their teacher about their questions the following day.
