About Tim

Hello,

I am a practicing writer that has published in national and international journals. I recently completed a Master of Fine Arts in nonfiction writing at Sarah Lawrence College. I know, firsthand, how overwhelming writing and reading can be when we lose sight of the key aspects and get bogged down in the many questions that the blank page throws at us. I genuinely look forward to helping with any reading and writing problem. I hope, most of all, to return enthusiasm to our reading and writing; it's the most crucial ingredient to our learning success.

As a reading and writing tutor, my purpose is to help guide a fellow worker into seeing the larger, most critical aspects of the written word. We will focus on building an essay's architecture, rather than first worrying about the smaller details (grammar, word choice ... ) that all too often overwhelm us as critical thinkers when we have neglected the fundamental ingredients. When we have worked out who will be reading our words, and why we're writing to them, and in what mode, we have a driving force that takes care of smaller details. Identifying these core ingredients likewise makes us critical and effective readers, and the two processes feed each other. By tending to those crucial aspects of writing (audience, purpose, form), we will learn how to tackle any topic in any subject.

I have taught argumentative and creative writing at university, have tutored undergraduate and graduate students from different disciplines and different countries, and through these experiences I've refined my method of guiding readers and writers into more confident, more enthusiastic learning. I aim to guide (not lecture) and to provide extremely precise feedback that is concrete and practical in its application; only through developing a self-awareness about why our writing is struggling can we apply what we learn from one experience to the next. I aim to keep the reading and writing process as clear, simple, and tangible as possible. I have had the pleasure to work with many students; I take pride in how students have used my system, the growth they've discovered for themselves, how they've come to think of reading and writing as sources of enjoyment and fulfillment rather than dread.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

As the liaison for a graduate nonfiction-writing program, I was responsible for the full range of counseling prospective students: I composed informative letters; arranged campus visits; helped complete application materials; researched areas of concern, such as financial aid, scholarships, employment and housing. At the same time, I was a researcher for the college's Strategic Planning process, in which I was asked to intensely research core components of the college environment: curriculum, funding, student life.

I have also taught at the university level, and conducted summer writing workshops for students writing their application-essays. These experiences, combined, have shown me the inner workings of the college environment, from application to study skills. I am confident in mentoring students as they apply to college and helping them navigate the challenges of college, academically and socially.
