About Elizabeth

Hi! My name is Liz and I am currently a special education teacher at a private school focusing on emotional disabilities. I have experience teaching language arts, social studies, math, and science, as well as, writing and reading comprehension goals. I earned my Bachelor's Degree in American Studies and Elementary Education at Rowan University. After I completed my dual major, I went back to school to complete credits for my Special Education certification. I have my teaching certificates in Special Education and Elementary Education.

I had started working with kids when I was just 16 years old. I was a junior aide and at before/after care center and as a summertime aide as well. I have designed arts and crafts, assisted in homework help, and assisted students during field trips. I have substituted for three different districts as a classroom aide and teacher until I earned a full time position as a classroom aide in an emotional disabilities classroom focusing on oppositional defiant disorder. I continued this position to where I began my first teaching position September 2014 and have been in my current position as a middle school special education teacher.

I am trained in Safety Care and School Wide Positive Behavior Support Systems. I believe all students have the potential to be whatever they want to be in life and all they need is a little confidence in school. I love to read and do arts and crafts when I am not working. I love to explore NJ, as well as go to different festivals across the state. I like learning new facts about American History and NJ geography.

I have taught mathematics at a 4th-6th grade level for the past year to my students. I am very comfortable with teaching subjects involving numeration, equations, geometry, fractions, and other necessary subjects. I prefer to use manipulative especially when teaching fractions and money.

I have a passion for reading. Last year, when I taught language arts, I assisted my students during their reading of The Hunger Games. For the Hunger Games we completed comprehension questions as well as a final project summarizing the qualifications needed to win the Hunger Games.

I have practiced vocabulary using the frayer model where students define the words, find the antonyms and synonyms, create a sentence and a picture displaying the meaning.

I believe in hands on activities that help show us what Science is all about. It is hard to read about Science so I would rather show what Science is all about. I enjoy studying weather and earth processes.

I am a very caring individual who understand in order for students to learn, they need to laugh and have fun while doing it.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

At the present time I currently work in a school that focuses on emotional disabilities. Most of my students are hindered by ADD/ADHD which causes them to take a few more breaks than a student without. These students will need more hands on and kinesthetic activities than verbal.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have my bachelors degree in Elementary Education and have experience in teaching kindergarten, 2nd, and 4th grades. I used hands on materials that students can relate to as well as subject material that may interest them. Students in the elementary grade succeed when items are bright and cheery and offer positive material.
