Helping students to feel positive and successful is very important to me but mostly, to them. Every student can learn and strive towards his/her goal. My philosophy is to learn something new every day regardless of your age. I am currently in my 31st year of teaching. I love my job. Students and I develop a great working relationship in class and in a tutoring situation as well. I have mentored many students throughout my career.
My major in college was language arts and social studies. I am certified in both areas as well as having a certification in general elementary education. Reading is such a valuable tool for everyone. You do not have to read just books. Magazines, newspapers, and online articles are all valuable and worthwhile. My students test scores show a marked increase. I am currently teaching language arts basic skills students. As we progress through difficult areas, they all feel confident and successful. They request to stay in my classroom all day and do their work. A warm, caring and non-threatening atmosphere is always present. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked with ADHD students for over 20 years. I use a variety of teaching methods and techniques to assist. My grandson also has ADHD and I work with him regularly. Students placed in my classes with ADHD are always successful.
I have been the head teacher and student coordinator for a study skills program at my school. I have also worked for a Learning Center with their tutoring and study skills program. Organizational skills are key. Learning and using various skills and techniques and also an integral part of student success.
