About Jennifer

Hello Students and Parents!

School is one of the hardest things that children have to deal with while they are growing up. Most classes have more than 20 students in them and children are expected to adapt to the teaching style that suits the majority of the class, whether they are in that majority or not. Falling behind or not understanding something is a nightmare. If this happens, it is almost impossible to catch up to the new things that are being taught and it is certainly "not cool" to ask for help. After all, what will their friends think if they raise their hand in class (especially five minutes before the bell rings!) or stay after school for extra help?

Tutoring is an excellent way to get extra help if it is needed. Unlike in a classroom, tutoring involves only one student and an adult whose only focus is the child being tutored. With a tutor, students are able to ask those "stupid" questions they don't want to ask in front of the class without feeling bad about themselves. In fact, tutoring is a great way to build confidence. Picture your child raising his or her hand to give an answer instead of signaling that he or she is confused, or even worse trying to hide so no one knows that he or she just doesn't get it.

I believe that the most effective tutoring occurs when the tutor is really in tune to the student's strengths and weaknesses as well as learning styles and preferences. It is important that during a one-to-one session, the child is learning in the way that works best for him or her. As a tutor, I provide a learning environment where each child I meet feels free to take risks and ask questions. It is important to me that I provide each student with the individualized attention that meets his or her exact needs and is so hard to get in the classroom.

As a recent college graduate in psychology and elementary education with special education endorsement, I have learned how to teach children from Kindergarten through 5th grade in all subject areas, as well as students with disabilities ranging from learning disabilities to the Autism spectrum. I have worked with children for 9 years as a teacher's aide, behavior assistant, and a residential counselor. In addition, I have volunteered with children with and without disabilities in a variety of environments. My love of children and education motivates me to provide the best instruction I can and helps me succeed in helping students be successful and confident about their schoolwork. My college experience and love for learning also gives me knowledge to tutor children of all ages in valuable skills such as study skills, note taking, test taking, and organization. I look forward to helping your children reach their potential and be the best student they can be.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Being certified to teach both Elementary Education and students with Disabilities, I have had exposure to children with ADD/ADHD. Children with ADHD/ADD benefit from subject matter that they find interesting with a work difficulty level that is slightly more difficult than can be completed independently. As a tutor, I will ensure that lessons are created based on a child's interests. Strategies for maintaining self-control in the classroom will be taught and encouraged.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism is a developmental disorder that hinders a child's social skills, communication, and language. Children with Autism also tend to have difficulty with motor skills as well as appropriate play. Since children with Autism have difficulty expressing their needs, they frequently resort to behaviors to get what they want.

I have worked in a preschool classroom for children with Autism for 5 years, during which time I was trained in both ABA and VBN. Both programs prepare caregivers by allowing them to understand functional behavior and treat it accordingly. In addition, I have volunteered for many organization increasing Autism awareness and worked for a nonprofit organization as a residential counselor for adolescents with Autism. I have experience working to individuals with Autism from age 2 through age 21.

Elementary (K-6th)

When teaching this age group, it is of utmost importance to keep the students engaged and excited about learning. A teacher or tutor's willingness to teach creative and inspiring lessons goes a long way in ensuring the success of a student.

I have completed the teaching program at Georgian Court University and am certified to teach grade levels Kindergarten through 5th grade. Through my coursework, I have been taught to make myself and my teaching methods flexible in order to meet the needs of each individual student that I teach.

Elementary Math

Elementary math can be very tricky if your student doesn't do well with numbers. As a college graduate certified to teach grades K-5, I have learned techniques and strategies to teach students how to transform numbers into something meaningful that they can work with.

English has always been one of my biggest strengths. As part of my teaching program in college, I have taken courses to learn strategies for teaching language arts to elementary school students. I have also had experience tutoring college students in their English classes.

I feel that I am qualified to teach phonics because I've received my teaching certification for grades K-5. I have also student taught 3rd grade and a preschool class for children with Autism. Both of these class curricula included phonics lessons to be taught to the students. Furthermore, I have worked with children on improving their speech and vocalizations by practicing the letter sounds and teaching them about the sounds the letters make.

Social Studies

Social studies is a subject that I've taught at the 3rd grade level and the preschool level through student teaching. I have also completed the education required to teach students in grades K-5 in subjects including social studies.

Special Needs

I work with children with special needs on a daily basis. I've student taught a 3rd grade inclusion class as well as a preschool autism class. In both classes, I had to make modification for students with learning and behavioral disabilities so that they could function and learn with their peers. In addition, I work as a behavioral assistant where I follow treatment plans to meet the unique goals of each of my client. I naturally involve education in our play so that the children are learning on their level and meeting their goals.

Study Skills

I am currently working as a behavioral assistant and one of the skills I work on with children is study skills. When children have difficulty performing well in school, I help them learn ways to increase their study skills both in school and out of school. Along with teaching them how to study, I teach them time management.

Jennifer was asked to come to our house weekly to ensure our 8 year old granddaughter's reading did not drop off over her summer vacation.
